Pokmon Brilliant Diamond/shining Pearl Review: Gameplay

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Review

If youve ever played a Pokémon game before, the gameplay in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is pretty much the same. You send out your Pokémon critters against your opponents’, and you engage in turn-based combat until you defeat them, or vice versa. Each Pokémon has an elemental type, such as fire, water or grass. Each type also has different kinds of weaknesses. Hitting an opponents weakness is the key to winning each battle.

One thing to note is that because Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are practically one-to-one remakes of the originals, the games don’t have any battle system gimmicks. Compare and contrast with the third generation of games: 2003s Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. Game Freak remade these in 2014 as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Those games incorporated the battle gimmick, Mega Evolutions, from Pokémon X and Y. The developers even had an entire explanation about how the remakes were on a separate timeline from the original games, where Mega Evolutions never existed before.

Its a bit disappointing to see Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl developer ILCA leave out the Dynamax system from Pokémon Sword and Shield, even if that mechanic was divisive among players. Including it would have definitely helped Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl forge identities of its own.

We Didnt Start With Fire

ILCAs faithfulness to the original Diamond and Pearl extends to the original pairs weaknesses, too, and nowhere does the commitment surface more conflicting emotions than in the roster of Pokémon you can build your team from. Diamond and Pearl have an utterly bizarre slate of Pokémon partners, skewed heavily toward a handful of types that make it challenging to assemble anything resembling a balanced group without being railroaded into using a few specific staples .

Thats still mostly the case in the Brilliant and Shining versions. ILCA devoutly stuck to the original roster monsters for the main story, with the rest unlocked in post-game and, frankly, some of the original Diamond and Pearl Pokémon line-up kind of stinks! While Platinums expanded roster is available for capture if you make enough visits to the Grand Underground and hunt long and hard enough, they dont appear on the surface where most of the story takes place, and it can be tricky to sniff out the exact partners you want to balance your team. Meanwhile, above ground, every other Pokémon is a Geodude, and there still arent enough fire-types to properly counter the hundred or so Bronzor youll inevitably have to fight.

What We Said About Pokmon Diamond And Pearl

After ten years of Game Boy Pokémon catching and battling, the core game mechanic still holds up as an addictive game design — tons of strategic depth and gameplay that’s incredibly rewarding it’s one of those games that offers an enormous sense of accomplishment for even the littlest things performed. And the touch screen functions of the Nintendo DS help move things faster and easier with simple navigation menus. The developers more capitalize on the system’s capabilities in function and interface rather than visual and audio presentation. Sure, there are elements going on here that couldn’t be done on the Game Boy Advance, but it’s hard to argue that the game looks and sounds a heck of a lot like the past portable versions. 8-bit limitations drove the game’s original style, but now that the limits are no longer there it’s a little bit of a letdown that Game Freaks played the whole Pokémon production conservatively instead of pushing something more epic. The gameplay holds up incredibly well a decade later, but we’re still looking like a 10-year-old portable game here. – Craig Harris, April 20, 2007

Complete The Sinnoh Dex

Firstly, youll need to complete the Sinnoh Pokédex. Thankfully, this can be done with one copy of the game, and in one playthrough. All you need to do is to see one of every Pokémon, not catch them, and this can all be achieved during the course of the normal game.

If youre struggling to see the box legendary of the other copy, Dialga or Palkia, speak to Cynthias grandmother and shell show you it.

After that, head back to Professor Rowan and hell upgrade your Pokédex for you, allowing you to catch almost 500 Pokémon in total, including plenty of new legendaries.

Two early versions of the Route 205 tunes. Interestingly, the unused Night music is a bit faster than the unused Day music.

Jubilife City’s Gym Leader!…But I’m just the humble caretaker.

Text for an NPC pretending to be Jubilife City’s Gym Leader exists in the Japanese versions of the game, providing additional evidence that there was to be a Gym in Jubilife City. The text bank that holds this line in the international copies is simply emptied out.

A Slow Mountain Stroll

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl – Gameplay Walkthrough Part 1 – Sinnoh Region Intro!

The region that players will explore in Diamond and Pearl is the mountainous Sinnoh, a place based on the real-life Hokkaido. Unlike Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire, where players struggled with the many water routes of Hoenn, Sinnoh is a snowy region full of cottages, mountains, and forests.

As we mentioned before, Game Freak decided that Nintendos capable DS had enough horsepower to move the game into the 3D realm. The battles are still rendered completely in 2D, but the overworld features some 3D structures.

Perhaps its due to the engine, but the exploration in Diamond and Pearl feels more sluggish than in its predecessors. Even the battles feel a bit slower than before, with many attacks featuring animations that take longer to play than they should. This ultimately makes playing the game feel more like a chore than it should.

Slates Are The Key To Encountering Legendary Pokmon

Inside the rooms of Ramanas Park are pedestals, and itâs said that if you insert the corresponding slate into a pedestal, a Legendary Pokémon will appear.

Itâs unclear exactly how these slates can be obtained, so youâll have to do some research as you explore the Sinnoh region.

The Genome Slate corresponds to the Genome Room.

It seems there are other, different slates as well.

Hall Of Origin And Azure Flute

An event item exists known as the Azure Flute, which was never officially distributed and can only be obtained through hacking the game. When hacked into your Bag, the Azure Flute can be used at Spear Pillar to warp to another map, the otherwise-unused Hall of Origin above Spear Pillar. Atop a glass staircase, on a platform high in the sky, you encounter a level 80 Arceus. It seems this event was the originally-planned method of Arceus distribution, but because the event was thought to be too confusing for players, Arceus was distributed directly as an event Pokémon instead.

Interestingly, it seems that an Azure Flute distribution hadn’t been ruled out as late as the releases of HeartGold and SoulSilver those games have a mechanism to allow a Hall of Origin-caught Arceus to return the player to the Sinjoh Ruins and get another one of the trio of Dialga/Palkia/Giratina.

As a consequence of this event remaining unused throughout the entirety of Diamond, Pearl and Platinum‘s release, all of the assets associated with the Hall of Origin area, including three unique pieces of music, are never used in the games:

Pokmon Brilliant Diamond/shining Pearl Review: Verdict

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are faithful remakes of the originals. The original Diamond and Pearl were already good, but the new quality of life features make it an even smoother experience. However, those same features feel inconsistent. The decision to not use the definitive Pokémon Platinum game as the foundation is puzzling, at best. This would have obviated the need for two versions of the same game, while also incorporating Platinums additional content.

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are still a fun ride, especially if youve played the originals. However, more creative risks might have helped the game really stand out.

Battling Down Memory Lane

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl tell the same story of a kid going on an adventure to catalog monsters before accidentally becoming the strongest fighter in the region and taking down an overt death cult with weird hair you know, standard Pokémon stuff. There are no earth-shattering surprises, even after you beat the Elite Four and unlock the National Dex, and for the time being the Pokémon roster is limited to just the Pokémon that were available in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum back in the day, so dont expect newer favorites like Corviknight, Wooloo, or Toxtricity.

Connectivity To Other Games

Pok̩mon Brilliant Diamond and Pok̩mon Shining Pearl РOverview Trailer РNintendo Switch

Diamond and Pearl boast compatibility with many other Pokémon games. They can connect with the Game Boy Advance Pokémon RPGs after earning the National Pokédex, when the Pokémon Game Boy Advance cartridge is inserted into the Game Boy Advance cartridge and accessory slot of the Nintendo DS while Diamond or Pearl is in the DS slot. After uploading six Pokémon from the cartridge, the Pokémon are sent into the Pal Park located southeast of Sandgem Town. Pokémon uploads are restricted to six every twenty-four hours per GBA cartridge. The player will have to re-capture such transferred Pokémon in Pal Park by means of a special Park Ball that has 100% chance of capture, before performing another transfer. Pokémon cannot be transferred from GBA cartridges to DS cards of different languages, Pokémon that know HM moves cannot be transferred, and the player cannot transfer any Pokémon back to the GBA cartridge once they are transferred to Diamond or Pearl.

Certain species of Pokémon traded internationally will have a Pokédex entry in the language of the game it originated from. This is enabled through a new function which is added to the player’s Pokédex, allowing the player to switch between multiple languages in those same Pokémon’s entries, including Japanese, English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.

Relationship To Other Genres

RPGs seldom test a player’s physical skill. Combat is typically a tactical challenge rather than a physical one, and games involve other non-action gameplay such as choosing dialog options, inventory management, or buying and selling items.

Although RPGs share some combat rules with , RPGs are often about a small group of individual characters. Wargames tend to have large groups of identical units, as well as non-humanoid units such as tanks and airplanes. Role-playing games do not normally allow the player to produce more units. However, the series crosses these genres by combining individual heroes with large numbers of troops in large battles.

RPGs rival in terms of their rich storylines, in contrast to genres that do not rely upon storytelling such as or . Both genres also feature highly detailed characters, and a great deal of exploration. However, adventure games usually have a well-defined character, whereas while RPGs may do so, many allow the player to design their characters. Adventure games usually focus on one character, whereas RPGs often feature an entire party. RPGs also feature a combat system, which adventure games usually lack. Whereas both adventure games and RPGs may focus on the personal or psychological growth of characters, RPGs tend to emphasize a complex eternal economy where characters are defined by increasing numerical attributes.
