Pokemon Promo No 2 Trainer World Championships: $110100

*ARE YOUR POKEMON CARDS VALUABLE?* How To Find Value!

Even runners-up get big prizes at World Championships, with all three finalists at Anaheim, California’s 2006 championships each receiving a copy of this massively valuable card. Winning the card in 2006 automatically granted entry to the finalist in 2007 as well, bypassing the whole organised points play system they would otherwise need to work through.

In February 2021, PWCC sold a PSA 9-graded copy of the card for $110,100. The fact it wasn’t even in pristine, PSA 10 condition and still sold for six figures should go some way to show the value of this card.

Crystal Charizard Holo Skyridge

  • Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
  • Pokemon card value at auction: $25,100

In 2003, interest in Pokemon cards had started to wane among core fans who had been collecting since it launched in 1999. As a result, production of the Skyridge set was considerably lower compared to past expansions.

This would also be the last release printed by Wizards of the Coasts and features the iconic e-reader designs meant to be a tie-in for the Game Boy Advance. Its low production has made the retro set one of the most expensive Pokemon cards products to hunt down from the era.

The crown jewel of the expansion is none other than Charizard. Its rare Crystal Holo design variant was extremely limited even at release. In November 2020, a perfectly graded version of the collectible sold for $25,100 at auction.

What Are The Rarest Pokmon Cards

Some Pokémon cards have special value, including:

  • Full-art cards: Their illustrations extend over the entire front of the card.
  • First-edition cards: They are among the first to be printed and display the edition 1 logo on the bottom left corner of the Pokémon illustration.
  • Holographic cards: They have reflective and shimmery backgrounds.
  • Shining Pokémon cards: They are inverse holographic cards.

The 18 Most Valuable Pokémon Cards That Are Worth a Ton of Money (Page 2)

When it comes to original Pokémon cards, the 1995 Topsun set is the pinnacle. This No Number PSA 10 Charizard is a POP 1, and warranted such a sale due to its rarity and originality. The Topsun Blue and Green Back Charizards are the rookie card for Zard and will command premium money due to ultra low populations and massive demand. The difference between the Blue & Green Backs is the Blue Back Charizards are much more rare and the ones with no number on them are the rarest Charizards to be produced. There have only been 4 total No Number Blue Back Charizards graded with PSA.

First Edition Holographic Venusaur

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $2,200

Venusaur, the final evolved form of one of the original starter Pokémon, Bulbasaur, is a dual-type grass and poison Pokémon with a noticeably large flower that protrudes from its back.

Because the creature uses that flower to absorb energy from the sun’s rays, it is constantly on the move in search of more sunlight.

Venusaur also serves as the mascot of the Pokémon Green video game making it one of the most recognizable of first edition Pokémon:

The Age Of The Pokemon Card

As a general rule of thumb, old Pokemon cards from the Base, Jungle, and Fossil sets are often quite valuable, especially the rare holographic ones.

Also, there is often a lot of hype around the newest Pokemon sets. If you pull a brand new ultra rare card from a booster pack, it will likely be worth money because of demand for new cards.

This isnt to say that cards from 2002-2020 are worthless. Many of the most expensive cards of all time were produced during this period. Its just important to know that extremely old and extremely new cards can often be more valuable.

This is what an old first generation Pokemon card looks like.

Kangaskhan Family Event Trophy

  • Release Date: 1998
  • Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
  • Pokemon card value at auction: $150,000

Were now in the top five, and the prices of these most expensive Pokemon cards continue to skyrocket. This 1998 Trophy Pokemon card could only be obtained by participating in a special tournament in Japan. The adorable item features artwork depicting Kangaskhan with its baby in its pouch, surrounded by holo sparkles.

Fittingly, the contest required both a child and their parent to participate alongside each other in TCG battles. According to reports, there are only 11 of these currently in existence that has been graded, making it one of the rarest Trophy Pokemon cards to exist.

In October 2020, two PSA 10s of the collectible went for $150k. With its scarcity, we expect this Pokemon cards value will only continue to go up over the next couple of years.

Holographic Shadowless Mewtwo: $20000

While the other Kanto starters dont come close to Charizard in the realm of First Edition cards, its hard to ignore the second-place winner off of its fame in the series. Most Pokemon fans are plenty aware of Mewtwo from the original Pokemon movie, and as a result cards featuring the character will often go for record-high prices in any set.

Much like the First Edition Charizard mentioned earlier, Mewtwo has its own Holographic and Shadowless version that PSA Collector has seen sold for at least $20,000, putting it far above Venusaur and Blastoise but still far below everyones favorite Fire-type tyrant of the skies.

25 Most Expensive Pokemon Cards

Clearly, the non-sports card collecting world is every bit as hot as the sports card hobby.

Passionate collectors are obviously willing to shell out big bucks to land any one of the prized possessions on this list.

The video games, television shows, and the cards themselves transformed Pokémon into a worldwide phenomenon with an enormous fan base.

And many of those kids who grew up with these cards are now adults with more spending power able to pay big bucks for them in top condition.

It doesnt look like that trend will slow anytime soon as these cards have found their place as one of the most popular non-sports sets in the hobby.

So, you say, you have a Charizard at home. Can you sell it and buy yourself a house as a result? Prrrrobably not.

There are a zillion different stipulations in terms of what elevates the price to this level. It has to be the right printing, absolutely flawless condition, meaning if you held it in your hand as a kid for more than five seconds before sealing it away, its probably not good enough already. Then you have to have the card graded by professionals, and since this has become such a popular trend recently, theres a huge backlog in that field, and it would take a long, long time to get that certification, whatever grade it ends up being. Its not impossible, and you could still have a valuable one, but to reach this level, your card would have to be on another plane of existence entirely.

I believe the most valuable Pokémon card in history is still the Pikachu Illustrator card that sold for $900,000, the Japanese card that was a limited edition creation for winners of an art contest, making it exceedingly rare. No Charizard is likely to hit that mark any time soon. Before this, the previous Charizard record was $399,000.

So hey, get yours graded if you want, justmanage expectations.

Lugia 1st Edition Neo Genesis

  • Release Date: 2000
  • Grading: BGS Pristine 10
  • Pokemon card value at auction: $144,300

Similar to Mewtwo, Lugia was an iconic Legendary for many children who grew up with the series in the 00s. So it should come as no surprise that its debut as a Pokemon card was a major hit.

While a 1st Edition Lugia broke records by selling for a mind-blowing $129,000 in 2020, a Beckett graded 10 version of the item sold for $144,300 at a PWCC auction in May 2021. BGS grades a lot harder than PSA, making this pristine Pokemon card one of only three in the entire world.

Look At Sold Listings For The Same Pokemon Card

On the left-hand side of the eBay search result, or in the filters tab, you can choose to view only sold listings.

The reason to do this is sellers will often list cards for more than theyre really worth, resulting in listings going on for months with no one buying the card. But if you view only sold listings, you can instantly see what people are actually willing to pay for the card.

If your card is in worse than near mint condition, you will need to look through these sold listings for cards in matching condition. Typically, sellers dont put their card condition in the title, so it can be difficult to use the search function to find matching cards.

Are Your Pokmon Cards Centered

Usually, the artwork of the Pokémon on your card is centered right inside the borders of the card.

Pokémon cards pulled straight from a booster pack will look like they have their artwork perfectly centered, but its actually not that uncommon for the art of a Pokémon card to be slightly misaligned.

Sometimes these cards are classified as Misprints and there are Pokémon card collectors that are willing to pay for cards with printing errors from the factory.

However, if you are looking to get your Pokémon cards professionally graded and valued, then artwork being off-centered will deduct points from the final evaluation score of your cards decreasing its general market value.

Off-centered printings can also occur on the back art of a card as well as the front. The Poke Ball art and logo that are present on the back of the card can also sometimes sit too far left or right of the cards center.

So its best to double-check these factors if you do happen to find a card that you might think is worth some cash!

First Edition Cards In Review

Whether you are a fan of them or not, there’s no debating that first edition Pokémon cards are some of the hottest cards in non-sports card collecting.

The video games, television shows, and the cards themselves transformed Pokémon into a worldwide phenomenon with an enormous fan base.

And many of those kids who grew up with these cards are now adults with more spending power able to pay big bucks for them in top condition.

It doesn’t look like that trend will slow anytime soon as these cards have found their place as one of the most popular non-sports sets in the hobby.

First Edition Item Finder

most expensive pokemon card

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $750

The intent of the Item Finder is exactly as it sounds: it aids players in locating items.

While its name and how it helps players find items greatly changed in later Pokémon games, the first edition card merely instructs the player to discard two cards from his or her hand and replace them with a trainer card.

Psa 10 Southern Islands Reverse Holo Mew: $5950

When the second Pokemon movie was released in Japan, the makers of the Trading Card Game decided to release a special edition set of cards to mark this occasion. The Southern Islands card series was born, featuring just two sets of nine cards apiece that were unique to any other set in the game.

Full sets of these cards can sell for a lot , but the absolute highest value is undoubtedly the Southern Islands Mew, which has a rare reverse foil treatment where the frame around the art is the only part thatâs shiny. In 2020, PWCC Auctions sold a copy of it for $4,155, and more recent auctions push it up as high as almost $6000. There have only ever been 19 copies given the PSA 10 grade, though other conditions are slightly more common.

How Much Are The Original Pokemon Cards Worth

When we discuss the original, first generation of Pokemon cards, for the sake of this article were going to specifically be talking about cards from 1999-2000.

These sets include:

These are the sets that many collectors grew up with.

It was their first introduction to Pokemon cards, and therefore they hold great nostalgic value.

Because of this, these are often the cards that people getting back into the hobby want to start collecting first. As you can imagine, this drives prices up.

The most popular entry point for new collectors is the original Base Set.

These were the cards flooding school playgrounds in 99, and these are the ones people want to own again.

Dont get me wrong, if you can get 1st Edition or Shadowless variants of these cards, theyre worth A LOT more!

But with 1st Edition Base Set booster boxes selling for north of £250k, they are quite unobtainable for most people at this point.

However! This further enhances the demand/value of the original Base set cards, as people snap them up, fearing the price will also continue to rise.

Its almost a vicious, yet brilliant cycle all at the same time

As an investment piece, old Pokemon cards show great growth potential for the future. But for the keen newbie simply trying to rebuild their old sets, its going to requite a fair amount of capital to get going.

Like with any pokemon card valuations, specific prices are entirely dependent on the four key factors we mentioned earlier .
