Why Are Japanese Pokmon Cards Worth Less Money

Japanese Pokémon cards are worth a bit less money in the U.S because U.S collectors tend to collect English cards first. The Booster Box prices and Booster packs are also less expensive than their English counterpart.

That being said, the market fluctuates and Japanese rare Pokémon cards, especially EX cards still fetch a good price in the U.S.

Are Japanese Pokmon Cards Worth More Or Less

Pokémon has become a wildly successful game franchise since it was first founded, and collecting Pokémon cards has become more than just a pastime, but also a potential opportunity to make money.

Although Pokémon originated in Japan, the cards are not guaranteed to be worth more money than their English-language counterparts.

Many believe that Japanese Pokémon cards are made from higher quality materials, which keeps their resale value up. Japanese Pokémon cards often have the first edition markings, which can drive up the price as well.

However, the average price for English Pokémon cards is generally higher. Because they are sold at a higher price, their resale value is often higher as well.

Why The Japanese Pokemon Card Market Is Stronger Than English

Last time, we briefly touched on the Japanese Pokemon card market and why it is a very good idea for collectors and investors to explore it rather than just staying on the English side all of the time.

For those of you who have never really touched Japanese Pokemon cards, this is obviously new to you. But if you are really serious about becoming a shrewd collector or a successful investor in this field, you cannot ignore the Japanese market, which is, at its core, stronger than the English market.

While Pokemon has certainly become a major phenomenon in America and the western world in general, lets keep in mind that its roots are in Japan. It is a Japanese creation. Pokemon Red and Blue, the inaugural video games of the franchise, were released in Japan in 1996. It wasnt until late 98 that they saw their release in the United States. Going even further, Pokemon cards saw their initial release in Japan in 96, but they didnt make it to America until 1999.

Because of that, Japan is always going to be the ground floor for anything Pokemon related. Whether its video games, cards or any other type of merchandise, Japan gets it first. America comes second.

So why wouldnt you want to dabble in the Japanese Pokemon card market to see what it has to offer?

I can understand the apprehension for native English speakers. After all, chances are, you cant read Japanese, so you might find it rather pointless to collect cards with Japanese text.

Mischievous Pichu Is The Pokmon Tcg’s Best

The Mischievous Pichu Promo card was created as part of a collaboration between the Pokémon Trading Card Game, the video creator Hajime Syacho, and the Japanese fashion brand Graniph known as P-Lab. Customers who purchased P-Lab. items, many of which feature the Mischievous Pichu art, would also receive the Mischievous Pichu Promo card as an extra gift. This gives the card extra value, since it can only be found by purchasing P-Lab. products rather than through booster packs like most cards. While promotional cards often become widely sought after for this reason alone, Mischievous Pichu has gone above and beyond to become the most desired card in Japan unlike other prized Pokémon cards that ended up being worthless.

Ironically, despite being such a big seller, Mischievous Pichu is actually somewhat terrible in competitive play. It only has one attack that is as likely to damage the user as it is the opponent. However, competitive viability is not the point of Mischievous Pichu. Much like Yu-Gi-Oh! cards that came packaged with video games, the scarcity caused by its limited run is a source of its popularity. The fun card art also plays a significant role, as does the fact that it is tied to some rather significant names. These traits make the Mischievous Pichu Promo an excellent collectible for Pichu fans as well as Pokémon card collectors, even with Pokémon cards likely to lose value soon.

If youre not sure about whether or not you should sell Pokemon cards online or in-person, hopefully this explanation will help you understand the difference

If you have very valuable cards that are worth a lot, you may want to consider selling online through a trusted site listed above.

Additionally, selling online will be a longer process as orders dont come in immediately. However, you will have a much higher chance of getting your card sold at full price.

If youre selling in bulk and have full packs that you can organize together, in-person selling might be a better option for you.

Sometimes people just want to get rid of their entire collection altogether and selling in-person is a really easy way to do so.

Organize your cards in value, rarity, packs, editions, etc and see which ones fit the proper selling type.

Chances are, youll have to sell online and in-person if you have a large enough collection.

What Influences Pokemon Card Prices

Before we get into how to sell Pokemon cards, we have to go over how Pokemon cards are valued and what makes expensive cards have such ridiculous price tags.

Generally, Pokemon cards are influenced by a few different factors:

  • Overall Demand.
  • Each of these 4 factors can have a dramatic effect on the pricing of the cards, with condition being the overarching factor that can obviously destroy your chances of ever selling a card.

Condition is determined by a few things such as scratches, creases, wear, tear, and liquid damage. You can view a more detailed guide here.

Rarity is determined by the symbols and numbers displayed on the bottom right corner of the card or the bottom right corner of the picture .

Circles or diamonds arent worth much, while stars and first edition symbols can be very rare.

Edition is determined by special types of cards that were made as part of a unique set. First edition cards are amongst the rarest Pokemon cards in the world.

Overall demand is pretty self-explanatory. If there is an abundance of a specific card, then it obviously wont be worth much. This somewhat ties in with the rarity of the card.

Ultimately, the goal is to find Pokemon cards that are first edition, rare, and have the highest grade possible: PSA 10 Mint, which basically means its a card that went straight from pack opening into a protective sleeve and has never been handled.

    Are Japanese Pokmon Cards Rare

    Pokemon Card Japanese

Japanese cards in general aren’t necessarily rarer. Sure, theyre harder to get hold of outside of Japan, so you may not see as many of them, but as with any other language of Pokémon card, theyre still broken down into different levels of rarity.

A Japanese Pidgey card isnt rarer just because its Japanese, for example. There are certain cards that are much rarer in their Japanese form than elsewhere. This could be for a number of reasons.

    • Generally the Japanese cards are rarer when: They have only been released in Japan and wont be released elsewhere

    • They have only been released in Japan and wont be released in other countries for a while yet

    • They are cards from a promotional event only in Japan. This may mean they are incredibly common in Japan, but just wont ever turn up in a pack elsewhere. While some are fairly common, like ones that come with a magazine, clothes, like the Pikachu Illustrator card or the Magikarp Tamamushi University Promo Card, are incredibly rare.

    • Whether a card is playable or unplayable – playable cards may be harder to get your hands on
