First Edition Item Finder

It’s $500! Are Premium Pokemon Cards Worth It?

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $750

The intent of the Item Finder is exactly as it sounds: it aids players in locating items.

While its name and how it helps players find items greatly changed in later Pokémon games, the first edition card merely instructs the player to discard two cards from his or her hand and replace them with a trainer card.

Looking Up How Much My Pokemon Cards Are Worth:

If you get too many results that include cards NOT like yours, use the checkboxes to pick the ones just like yours. Choosing a few comparable items by using the checkboxes gives you a much more accurate estimate of what your Pokemon card is worth.

What to do next:

Once youve gone through and searched for the value of your Pokemon cards using the mavin.io price guide, you have several different options:

If the Pokemon cards are valuable: You can either hold onto the cards, perhaps get them graded if theyre really valuable, and hopefully see them appreciate in value over time. Alternatively, you sell it to a local card shop without getting ripped off since you know its worth. Lastly, you can sell it yourself on eBay to get a competitive price. Read our guide to selling on eBay.

If the Pokemon cards are worthless: A card doesnt have to be worth money to be considered valuable. Each card has sentimental value to someone: where they got it, the deck it was a part of, that time you used it to battle so-and-so a lot of people tend to hang onto them because of the memories. If you want to get rid of your Pokemon cards, they could be worth some memories to a relative or a stranger. Put them on Craigslist, take them to a card shop, donate them, or pass them along to your kids or a relative. Theres still a lot of fun to be had in those dusty Pokemon cards youve been hanging onto!

Special Cards To Keep An Eye Out For

Aside from the various rares mentioned above, there are a few unique traits worth looking out for that can mean a Pokemon card has high value. These are often printing errors or limited distribution that led to a card becoming extremely precious to collectors. Sometimes these cards look no different than others of the same kind at first glance and require special attention to identify, so look carefully!

A Brief History Of The Pokmon Trading Card Game

Found my old Pokemon cards, are they worth anything?

Launched in October 1996, the Pokémon Trading Card Game became one of the most successful spin-off products of the entire Pokémon franchise. Just like the games, players assume the role of a Pokémon trainer, but TCG had kids fulfilling their fantasy of battling each other long before the games had any multiplayer features.

To date, TCG has sold over 30 billion cards worldwide and has been constantly expanded with new cards since its release. Besides the game itself, collecting has become a popular hobby, with certain cards becoming insanely valuable.

With several high-profile sales making headlines, more and more people are digging up their old binders, desperate to find buried treasure. The TCG collecting community is now more active than ever, with no signs of slowing down.

Old Pokmon Cards That Are Worth A Fortune

Gotta collect them all!

Pokémon cards have been the death of every parent going through the grocery store checkout for many years now. Almost every young kid or once-young kid can identify with having a few of these elemental cards in a binder or sitting in a tin. Lord knows that I do! Pokémon cards were actually one of the things that helped put Pokémon on the map and kept the franchise in people’s hearts to this day.

Ever since the original base set came out, there have been countless expansions, revivals, and re-imaginings of countless cards. Because of this, there is no end to what you’ll be able to collect. For those of you that are fond of the base set, all of those cards are being reprinted and reworked to fit in today’s current metagame. The set is called XY Evolutions and comes out in early November. You’re welcome.

Before I get too sidetracked, anybody that collects Pokémon cards knows that some of them have an amazing value, well over a few hundred dollars. Some of those valuable ones are special cards that were given out at events, but there are plenty of others that were much easier to get your hands on, especially from the older sets.

Psa 10 Neo Genesis First Edition Holo Lugia: $129000

Neo Genesis is effectively the Base Set of the second generation of Pokemon. It was the first time Pokemon from Silver, Gold, or Crystal appeared in the TCG, and it was also marred by a large number of misprints and mistakes in its very first run. Alongside it being the mascot of Pokemon Silver, that’s mainly why a mint condition, holo, first edition Lugia from Neo Genesis is so highly desirable. The PSA has only given a PSA10 grade to 43 of these.

Prices for this card are incredibly unstable, even between cards with the same condition. In November 2020 PWCC sold a copy for $129,000, while less than a year later in September 2021, Goldin sold one for “just”$47,970.

Why Are Pokemon Cards Suddenly Popular Again

Pokemon card collecting has always been popular, as evidenced by the 34 billion cards now in circulation.

But even the makers of Pokemon cards were caught off guard when demand began skyrocketing in mid-2020. In addition to being fun, addictive, and nostalgic, collecting Pokemon cards during the pandemic even promised a potential form of economic relief each $4 booster pack could contain a Charizard GX SV 49 worth $1,800.

Soon, celebrities and influencers picked up on the resurging popularity of Pokemon cards. In early October, Logan Paul live-streamed an event where he opened a rare box of cards worth $200,000 in front of his 22 million subscribers. Pokimane and other influencers quickly followed suit, offering a Pokemon-flavored version of the ever-popular unboxing videos.

Things came to a head on October 13th, 2020 when rapper Logic bought a first-edition, holographic Charizard for an eye-watering $220,574.

Pokmon Japanese Base Set No Rarity Symbol Holo Venusaur

Is This REALLY Worth $300?! Celebrations Pokemon Cards

A very rare Pokémon card made ever more valuable by its artists autograph

Sold for $55,000 in November 2021

Many of the rarest Pokémon cards date from the trading card games early days, with first edition cards released in the 1990s ranking as among the most valuable Pokémon cards today.

While the first edition stamp on cards is highly sought-after in the English edition of the Pokémon card game, the rarest Japanese Pokémon cards are instead identified by their lack of a stamp. Specifically, a missing black star in the bottom-right of a Japanese-language card is whats known as No Rarity meaning that the card is missing the common symbol used to signify a Pokémon cards rarity.

No Rarity Pokémon cards are among the rarest Pokémon cards in existence, and few come rarer than the Venusaur Pokémon card from the games first print run in 1996. Just five copies of the Bulbasaur evolution famous for appearing on the original video game Pokémon Green have been graded at a perfect Gem-Mint 10 by PSA, making a flawless copy of the card extremely rare.

While a No Rarity Venusaur card commands a high price by itself, a copy sold in November 2021 set a new record for the rare Pokémon card by fetching $55,000 at auction. Helping the record sum was the signature of the cards illustrator Mitsuhiro Arita the legendary artist behind many Pokémon cards from the last 20-plus years on the cards case, making the already rare Pokémon card truly one-of-a-kind.

Pokmon Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless Holo Blastoise #2

12 most expensive 1st edition pokemon cards: are they still worth anything?

The second of the trio of evolved starters from the 1999 set, Blastoise was also the cover star for Pokémon Blue.

First off, lets get the price tag out of the way. A PSA 10 copy sold for $45,000 in 2020, with another selling for $44,000 this year.

Its all the more astounding considering there are around 100 when looking at graded pristine copies.

However, Blastoise is indisputably one of the most popular Pokémon ever, and the same goes for Squirtle and Wartortle, which is the evolution path it follows.

In fact, its the second-most valuable card from the original 1999 set.

Tropical Mega Battle No 2 Trainer

  • Release Date: 1999
  • Grading: PSA Authentic
  • Pokemon card value at auction: $50,300

Interestingly, this is the first Pokemon card in the top 20 that is so poor quality-wise, it didnt even receive a grade. In situations like this, PSA will still give it an official Authentication. Dont let the grading fool you, though, as the Tropical No. 2 Trainer card is pristine except the back which has color loss and fading due to the sun.

Given out originally at the 1999 Mega Battle tournament in Japan, only the top players received this Pokemon card. In total, PSA has only seen five of these, making it one of the rarest Pokemon cards in existence. Its so scarce that its still worth a jaw-dropping amount despite its quality setbacks think about that.

According to PWCC, one of these green Exeggutor prizes was sold at an auction in October 2020 for $50,300. Its fascinating to think that even a damaged card can sell for as much as a sports car. And this Pokemon cards value will only continue to climb given that they just dont exist.

Most Expensive Pokmon Cards In Review

Clearly, the non-sports card collecting world is every bit as hot as the sports card hobby.

Passionate collectors are obviously willing to shell out big bucks to land any one of the prized possessions on this list.

The video games, television shows, and the cards themselves transformed Pokémon into a worldwide phenomenon with an enormous fan base.

And many of those kids who grew up with these cards are now adults with more spending power able to pay big bucks for them in top condition.

It doesn’t look like that trend will slow anytime soon as these cards have found their place as one of the most popular non-sports sets in the hobby.

Topsun Charizard Blue Back No Number Error

Sold in January, 2021 for $493,230

As with the other Topsun cards mentioned earlier on this list, Top-Seika didn’t distribute them until 1997, even though their copyright date reads 1995.

And since they weren’t part of the official Pokemon Trading Card Game, they are considered more in the realm of novelty collectible cards.

Still, an early Pokemon card is an early Pokemon card…

And, whether you’re talking about the prism holos, green-backs, or blue-backs, collectors are willing to pay thousands of dollars for several of the Topsun cards when graded in PSA 10 condition.

But a price tag of thousands of dollars turned out to be quite an understatement in January 2021 when Goldin Auctions sold the most desirable of them all, the only “no number error” blue-back Charizard on record in a PSA 10 holder, for a whopping $493,230.

The blue-back checklist contains 150 numbered cards in total, but for some reason, about 50 of the characters were also printed with no number on them by mistake.

So, while the standard blue-back Charizard should contain a “006” on it in the upper-left of the front of the card, the “no number error” will be blank.

If you can find one and are lucky enough to have it graded PSA 10, you could be looking at life-changing money.

Psa 10 Holographic Shadowless First Edition Chansey: $1100

FAST & EASY – How To Find The Value Of Any Pokemon Card!

Despite not being one of the iconic starters or legendaries, Chansey is still one of the most valuable cards from Pokemon’s Base Set. Like every other base set card, the Shadowless version gets a much higher price at auction.

There are 48 PSA 10-graded holo, shadowless Chanseys verified by the PSA. Despite that, they don’t tend to fetch as high a price as their slightly more common expansion mates, like Charizard, probably because it is a less popular Pokemon. The last verified auction sale of a PSA 10 Chansey was in 2021, when PWCC Auctions sold one for $27,412.

Mew Gold Star Ex Dragon Frontiers

Mew is a psychic Pokemon that has the ability to make itself invisible at will. This skill comes in handy in many battles. As many Pokemon, it is cute as a button. This 2006 card is another example of the power of the Gold Star. As part of the EX Dragon Frontiers series, the Mew Gold Star card is worth a pretty penny. If your card is in mint condition, expect to get well over $500 for this one. Make sure if you find one that you didnt know you had, that you have it graded by PSA . They are the standard in trading card appraisal. This provides authenticity and makes it a lot easier to go ahead and sell for full or close to full appraised value.

Neo Genesis 1st Edition Holographic Lugia

As one of the rarest and most powerful legendary Pokémon in the GameBoy titles, it makes sense that Lugias trading card game incarnation would be equally hard to catch. Not only is this a rare and powerful card, but its also from the Neo Genesis set .

The first run of Neo Genesis cards was plagued with various print errors that make cards like this notoriously tricky to grade. As of writing, only 43 holographic Lugias have been graded a perfect 10 by PSA.

One PSA 10 card was sold for $50,000 in 2020. A year later, a holo Lugia graded a Pristine 10 by BGS sold for an incredible $144,300.

Hes so hot right now!
