Super Secret Battle No 1 Trainer

*ARE YOUR POKEMON CARDS VALUABLE?* How To Find Value!

No. 1 Trainer is a holographic promotional card awarded to finalists in the Secret Super Battle tournament held in Tokyo, Japan, in 1999. It was awarded to regional finalists, and by presenting the card, the finalists gained preferential entry into the Secret Super Battle.

It is believed that at the time, the organizers made only seven cards. In addition, the grading organization PSA graded six of the cards to be of good quality. As such, a quality card was sold at auction in July 2020 for $90,000.

Are Your Pokmon Cards Rare

With regards to most Pokémon cards, there are 4 levels of standard rarity that are worth mentioning for now.

Its also important to note here, when we are talking about Rarity or how Rare a card is, I am not referring to the actual scarcity of the card or hard it is to fine.

Pokémon cards have different rarity classifications that are assigned by the Pokémon company themselves and can often be identified by the symbol printed on the card.

This can be somewhat confusing to those new to the trading card scene as most people will use the term rare interchangeably between the Classification rare and Monetary value rare.

This isnt something you should worry too much about as often a card that is Monetary value rare will also have the classification of Rare, hence why many players will use the term interchangeably.

You can figure what classification level a card has by looking for a small symbol in one of the bottom corners of your card:

  • Common: A small black circle
  • Uncommon: A diamond shape
  • Rare: A tiny star

Promotional: A black start with the word PROMO written across it

As a general rule, the rarer the Pokémon card classification the more money it will be worth. However, this isnt always the case, so its best to be vigilant when evaluating your Pokémon collection.

There are certainly some Uncommons, and possibly even commons, that exist from much older Pokémon sets that might be considered more valuable than modern-day Rares.

Squirtle First Edition $370

Squirtle is the first evolution of Blastoise and carries the 2nd most value of any of the big three pre-evolutions. Although grading has slowed down drastically, prices have dipped in the Pokemon market. That said, Squirtle is one of the essential characters of the show and is a must have for any collector. Be sure to assemble your Squirtle-Squad by acquiring his English Rookie card.

Its Okayish Better Of Using Tcg Player

My only problems is when it scans older 90s cards and others it will not detect that it is holo and assume you scanned a non holo version. Then when it scans a card as a example Electrode will not show that it was printed in Jungle and only show other sets that have a card named Electrode. When you scan a Pokémon card it will not automatically show the original set the card came from then you have to scroll through a page or so to find the right set since different versions where printed. If it plans to continue like this the sets should be shown by numerical print order. There are also certain cards it has a hard time scan so far for me its been Misty and foreign cards expect Japanese cards.

The Popularity Of The Pokemon Franchise

eBay Pokemon Cards Selling Price

Since its origin in 1996, the Pokemon franchise has maintained a steady if not slowly growing popularity. Its had its explosions of attention with the releases of e.g. new video games , but has never severely declined in popularity.

If Google Search data is anything to go by, on average, Pokemon is about as popular as the NBA.

How Do You Know If Youve Got A Valuable Card

You can check the bottom of each card to see roughly how rare it is.

A circle means common, a diamond means uncommon, a star means rare and a white or gold star means ultra-rare.

Holographic and first edition cards are also typically worth extra.

To see how much your cards are worth, you can check eBay to see how much those cards are going for on the site.

Limited-edition cards that collectors can only get by going to special events or through competitions, will also be more valuable and expensive.

However, you have to take into account hidden costs such as shipping fees, tax liabilities on sales and storage costs.

Storage is crucial to keeping cards in mint condition and preventing them from any damage.

These are the cards that everyone wants to be pulling from a booster pack. Theyre usually some of the biggest creatures in the game and some of the hardest cards to find.

These cards can also be classed as Ultra Rare. In truth, they have a lot of different names and come with a unique mechanic thats special to the current rotation.

What Is The Psa Grading Scale

Getting a PSA grade can make high-value cards worth even more and can also help you avoid unnecessary haggling or debating with a potential buyer about the condition of the card you have.

When you are looking to buy a card and the seller makes claims to a certain grade, ask for the required documentation from the PSA or the grading number. All grades that get graded by PSA are given a unique ID number that anyone can look up on their website.

This can help potential buyers spot fake Pokémon cards or cards that claim to have been graded when they havent. So if you are planning to get your Pokémon cards and get them professionally graded its important that you hang on to these details.

Lastly, try not to be disappointed if you dont find hidden gems in your collection.

Unfortunately, it is not an all-too-common event that you will discover a card that is worth several thousands of dollars well, this is why rare cards are called rare!

If you are only in it for the money, trading Pokémon cards will likely be a rather disappointing experience.

You can also treat it as a moment of nostalgia and an opportunity to re-connect with a childhood passion, constantly looking at your Pokémon card collection with a cold, monetary appraising stare can often suck the enjoyment that we get from collectible trading card games.

Whether you are a buyer or a seller, I wish you all the best in your future Pokémon trading endeavors!

Your Old Pokmon Cards Are Now Worth Hundreds Of Dollars

  • 22 Dec 2021

Ah, Pokémon, the card-collecting phenomenon of the 90s. If you were a kid in the early 90s then its likely you watched the Pokémon TV show, had Pokémon toys and begged your parents to buy you Pokémon cards to collect and swap with your friends.

Once upon a time you could pick up Pokémon cards from your local novelty store or newsagency for a few bucks. But these days those very cards could be worth a whole lot of money, especially if you had rare, limited edition or shiny cards in your collection.

There’s been a resurgence of Pokémon card collecting, and Pokémon fans that have long since grown-up into working, money-earning adults are now more than happy to pay a pretty penny to round out their extensive Pokémon card collections.

Of course, just how much your cards are worth depends on what youve got.

In 2016 the Pikachu Illustrator Pokémon card sold at a Heritage Auctions sale for more than $54,000, due to its rarity. Only 20 to 39 copies of the card were produced so if youre sitting on one now is the time to sell.

But that isnt to say some of the more common cards arent worth anything.

In an article for The Sun in the UK, collectables expert Tracey Martin said that holographic cards are the most valuable, and cards released between 1999 and 2000 known as shadowless Pokémon cards are now highly sought-after.

Working With A Local Dealer

I would recommend selling your collection to a dealer in your area. These folks dedicate a significant portion of their time to buying and reselling Pokémon cards on a professional or semi-professional level, and they may be interested in acquiring your collection.

However, it’s important to understand that the dealer’s motivation is to resell your cards at a profit, so they will often offer about half the market value of your cards, considering the condition of your collection. But consider this as a convenience fee for selling your cards without having to seek out and render service to dozens or hundreds of buyers.

There are a ton of hidden costs and hours of labor behind the market values you see on popular websites. Even if your cards are in impeccable condition, if you approach a dealer, understand that they need to compensate themselves for the labor of selling the cards despite the costs inherent to selling, and those considerations will impact how much they are able to offer you.

Amazing App And Support Team

More people need to download this app. I cant tell you how many times Ive seen folks ask online how much a single card is worth. Whereas I have to value over 100s of cards in a single day! So of course, I needed something to make my life easier. And this app is so quick and easy to use, and Ive rarely encountered issues with it. Of course, the scanner isnt perfect but I noticed its getting much better with each release. And the few times I have noticed some bugs myself, I emailed their support team and they were super responsive and quick to jump on fixing the issues. I even suggested some new features and enhancements, which they said they liked and I appreciate the acknowledgment at least. You just dont see that kind of support from other apps. Anyways, I highly recommend any hardcore Pokémon card collector like myself to use this app. Itll save you so much time keeping track of your inventory and pricing. I personally collect Pokémon cards to complete master sets. And its hard to keep track of what you own . So instead of flipping through physical binders I can just use this app to confirm whether I have a card and how much its worth.

Top Tips In This Article

Scott Pratte, our expert card trader and collector, provided lots of tips to make money selling Pokemon cards. Here is his best advice:

  • First edition or New Edition? All kidding aside, we know that you know New Edition is a boy band from the 70s and 80s. Still, you need to know what you have in that box of Pokemon cards. In other words, which are the rare cards and which are not. Do you have one of the original holographic cards? Cha-ching.
  • Whats the condition of your cards? If theyve been under the bed in a box so light didnt fade them or the dog didnt get to them, you may be in good shape. Never taken out of the wrapper? More cha-ching. That is whats called mint. All cards in good condition are likely worth more than what you paid for them.
  • The best place to sell Pokemon cards? Its eBay all the way. It would be great to sell one card for oodles of money and eBay has facilitated some of that. But if you want a big audience and buyers willing to shell out $30 a pop for your cards, you can rack up sales.
  • Think youve got something valuable? Consult the Professional Sports Authenticator and get an estimate. This will put you in a good position to haggle with a buyer, which you should expect to do.

A Note On Pricing And Condition:

The examples throughout this text all utilize the Pokémon Charizard, who typically fetches the highest prices of any Pokémon from these early sets. Those looking to sell their collections should not expect Charizard-level pricing for other cards from these sets. While other Pokémon, like Blastoise and Venusaur, carry decent value, none approach the level of Charizard.

The pricing examples all note that the estimated retail pricing reflects a card in Near Mint condition. Finding cards from this era in Near Mint condition can be quite difficult. Pokémon cards are essentially pieces of a game, and many became treasured possessions of children who took them to school in their pockets to show off and trade. As a result, cards frequently show significant wear, which significantly affects their value. Unless exclusively stored in binders and played with in card sleeves , there are few Near Mint examples in circulation. In addition, cards that came from a household with heavy cigarette smoke, or that were stored in a damp attic or garage in the intervening years, can have a lowered value, even if the card physically appears otherwise Near Mint.

If you are considering selling your cards to a store, expect a much lower price than the retail price as stores would typically only pay between 30% and 60% of the retail value of an item.

How Much Are Old Japanese Pokemon Cards Worth

How To Price Check Pokemon Cards

The Japanese Base Set was released in 1996, a solid three years before the English version.

Commended in the Pokemon community for their quality, old Japanese Pokemon cards are sought after items for any collector.

However, their value is affected by a couple of factors.

Unlike the English version where booster boxes contained 36 packs and roughly 12 holographic cards. Japanese Base set booster boxes contained 60 packs and the pull rates on holos are known to be as high as 50%.

As youd expect, this drives the value down compared to their English counterparts.

However, there is also a well-known printing error with Japanese base set, where they missed off the rarity symbol from the bottom right corner of the cards.

If youre lucky enough to own these cards, then they are extremely valuable and command a premium.

Pokemon then decided to print future vintage Japanese sets like Jungle, Fossil and Team Rocket with a holographic card in every pack.

Although these were fun to open, it also took away some of the excitement, rarity and value.

The main thing that combats this though, as mentioned above is the quality of the cards.

Card centering, print lines, and edge-wear is less common, therefore its easier to obtain a high score when getting Japanese cards graded. The higher the grade, the higher its value of course.

How Much Are The Original Pokemon Cards Worth

When we discuss the original, first generation of Pokemon cards, for the sake of this article were going to specifically be talking about cards from 1999-2000.

These sets include:

These are the sets that many collectors grew up with.

It was their first introduction to Pokemon cards, and therefore they hold great nostalgic value.

Because of this, these are often the cards that people getting back into the hobby want to start collecting first. As you can imagine, this drives prices up.

The most popular entry point for new collectors is the original Base Set.

These were the cards flooding school playgrounds in 99, and these are the ones people want to own again.

Dont get me wrong, if you can get 1st Edition or Shadowless variants of these cards, theyre worth A LOT more!

But with 1st Edition Base Set booster boxes selling for north of £250k, they are quite unobtainable for most people at this point.

However! This further enhances the demand/value of the original Base set cards, as people snap them up, fearing the price will also continue to rise.

Its almost a vicious, yet brilliant cycle all at the same time

As an investment piece, old Pokemon cards show great growth potential for the future. But for the keen newbie simply trying to rebuild their old sets, its going to requite a fair amount of capital to get going.

Like with any pokemon card valuations, specific prices are entirely dependent on the four key factors we mentioned earlier .
