I Began To Realize It Could Become A Full

When I started collecting again about two years ago, I found streamers on Twitch and different platforms doing box breaks.

A box break is where you take a sealed product of Pokémon with 36 packs 11 cards in each pack and people bid to win a certain pack hoping it’s one of the 12 that have holo foil cards in them, which are the expensive cards.

One of my connections from Stanford University, Jeff Jordan, who works at Andreessen Horowitz, recommended I get involved with a company they’d just backed called Whatnot, a retail-entertainment app, which offers a livestream-shopping platform where you can buy or sell a crazy range of items.

Imagine Ryan Reynolds selling you watches that’s the sort of thing Whatnot has to offer.

We ended up doing a box break on Whatnot, and we turned $50,000 worth of Pokémon cards into $108,000 in that first show. People usually end up bidding more than the actual cost of the packs, and then Whatnot takes a commission on the sale price.

I had a blast opening the packs for people on livestreams, and I realized you could actually make money doing it.

At first, I thought people were just doing it for fun and nostalgia, which was my main reason for starting it. But I realized lots of people were into it and wanted to do it. When I started, there were only about four people on the app, but it’s crazy on there now.

What To Expect Selling Pokmon Cards

The selling process varies from site to site, but they generally follow the same process.

If you are selling to a site that buys the cards in bulk, you will need to check their buylist and mail the cards to them. You will get paid within a week in most cases.

If you are selling to an individual buyer through eBay or social media, you will get to set the price, but you will have to find buyers yourself and you must mail the cards to the buyer.

It is up to you to determine if you or the buyer pays for shipping.

In the case that you are selling your Pokémon cards to a local store, they will inspect the cards to determine their value and give you a price, which you can try to haggle the price.

You can either sell the cards and they will give you cash on the spot, or you can try to sell the cards for more at other stores.

The second important factor in a cards value is the condition. If you do happen to have a first-edition, holographic base-set Charizard, youre not guaranteed thousands of dollars. The selling price depends on how well the card has been taken care of.

If you have a card that you expect is worth more than $100, Pratte recommends getting it graded by Professional Sports Authenticator .

Despite its name, the PSA grades all kinds of trading cards, including non-sports cards like Pokemon. PSAs 10-point grading scale is accepted as the industry standard, and the company also publishes price guides to help you determine a cards worth.

According to its current valuations, first-edition cards in perfect condition are valued at a minimum of $40. Those arent rarer, holographic cards either. A first-edition holo in mint condition can rake in between $1,000 and $24,000.

So why Prattes $100 limit? Well, the number isnt a hard-and-fast rule, but the card-grading services offered by PSA will cost $20 or more per card, meaning a lower-value card doesnt always merit the cost to get it authenticated.

Its a process, PSA spokesperson Terry Melia said. But its something that could reap big rewards in the end.

In addition to grading the condition of the card, PSA ensures the card isnt a forgery by using high-powered lights and magnifying equipment to check for tampering.

There are a lot of forgeries and bogus merchandise out there, Melia said.

Organize The Cards By Sets

A good way to organize your cards is by sets. You can identify a set by a small symbol. On old sets, this symbol will appear in the bottom right corner of the Pokémon illustration.

On new sets, this symbol will appear on the bottom right corner of the whole card.
