Valuable Japanese Pokemon Cards

Pokmon Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless Holo Chansey #3

My Exceedingly Rare Japanese Pokemon Card Collection || Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Promos, and More

Another Pokémon who featured heavily in the cartoon, Chansey is a basic holo with a difference. It has a massive 120 HP, while its Double-edge attack hits for 80.

However, the stats arent the reason why gem mint shadowless first edition versions have sold for over $36,000.

As a normal-type Pokémon, the card is wrapped in a white background which contrasts heavily with the yellow border. Chansey is essentially a pink blob, while the holo that surrounds it will flake away instantly.

Its exceedingly condition-sensitive, and there are only 48 copies that have earned gem mint status.

What Makes First Edition Shadowless Base Set Raichu So Valuable

The evolution of Pikachu was always going to be a popular character. It makes me think back to that brilliant early episode where Ashs Pikachu defeats Lt. Surges Raichu. Find it on Netflix, you wont regret it!

With a PSA 10 population of 87 it makes similar reading to the First Edition Mewtwo above.

I like the character, I like the old school Ken Sugimori artwork, and this particular card has a lot of nostalgic value because of the links to Pikachu. Overall, I think it justifies its value very well.

Pokmon Japanese Design Promo 4th Grade Winner Illusions Zoroark

To coincide with the theatrical release of the Ruler of Illusions: Zoroark movie, CoroCoro Comics ran a competition to design a Pokémon card. Entrants had to submit a design for a Zoroark Pokemon card, and the winners each received 100 printed copies of their creations. As such, each one only had an original population of 100. This majestic scene, designed by a fourth grader, has only 42 cards remaining, with 23 PSA 10 and 18 PSA 9 and one PSA 7. Because they were distributed privately, there have been very few sales however, the latest one in 2022 fetched a massive sum of $40,800 a significant increase on previous sale amounts of around $800.

Pokemon Promo No 2 Trainer World Championships: $110100

Even runners-up get big prizes at World Championships, with all three finalists at Anaheim, California’s 2006 championships each receiving a copy of this massively valuable card. Winning the card in 2006 automatically granted entry to the finalist in 2007 as well, bypassing the whole organised points play system they would otherwise need to work through.

In February 2021, PWCC sold a PSA 9-graded copy of the card for $110,100. The fact it wasn’t even in pristine, PSA 10 condition and still sold for six figures should go some way to show the value of this card.

What Is The Most Expensive Pokmon Card

Rare Original 90

As of August 2022, the most expensive Pokémon card is a Professional Sports Authenticator grade 10 Pikachu Illustrator card that social media personality and boxer Logan Paul purchased for $5.275 million, according to Guinness World Records.

A PSA grade of 10 means the card was in perfect condition. There is only one known PSA grade 10 Pikachu Illustrator card in the world, according to Guinness.

In June 2021, Paul purchased a PSA grade 9 Pikachu Illustrator card for $1.275 million. He traded this card, along with $4 million, to obtain the PSA grade 10 card he now owns.

According to Guinness, Paul wore his PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator card on a chain around his neck to his April 2022 appearance at WrestleMania 38, where he was presented with a certificate for the world record.

Here are some of the rarest and most expensive Pokémon cards, according to Dicebreaker:

1. Pikachu Illustrator

In April 2022, it was confirmed that Logan Paul paid $5.275 million for a PSA grade 10 Pikachu Illustrator card. The Illustrator card, given out to 39 winners of the 1997 and 1998 Pokémon illustration contests, is extremely rare. Only 23 have been certified by the PSA, and only one has been given a PSA rating of 10.

2. 1999 First Edition Shadowless Holographic Charizard #4

This card sold for $420,000 at auction in March 2022, after breaking numerous records in the past. According to Dicebreaker, only 121 copies of the card have been rated as Gem Mint 10 by the PSA.

Pokemon Korean First Edition Charizard

Sold in March, 2021 for $40,000

Unlike some of the other first edition Pokemon cards distributed in different regions and languages in 1999, the Korean version did not debut until a year later in 2000.

Still, they can fetch colossal price tags on the open market just like the other first edition sets.

Not surprisingly, the Charizard is the most desirable of the Korean first edition series.

Pokemon Japanese Promo Tropical Mega Battle Tropical Wind Psa 10

Price: $65,100

The Tropical Mega Battle event in Hawaii distributed eight different cards to its players, and Tropical Wind was one of those cards. Its not the rarest card they gave out in fact, its the most common on the market of the set.

However, its very rare to find a mint condition Tropical Wind Promo Pokémon card or any of the cards within the series. So, its less surprising than it might be that the Tropical Mega Battle Tropical Wind Promo Pokémon card sold for $65,100 on eBay in October 2020 in mint condition.

Misprinted Fossil Krabby: $2200

While misprints might be irritating for the normal player or casual collector, for the hardcore they can be very big money. If a card runs through the printer wrong, is miscut, has a typo on it, or anything else, it can increase the value significantly. One great example of that is this Fossil Krabby,

The difference between these multiple miscuts and a normal card is that part of a fossil symbol to the bottom-left of its art is missing. This seemingly minor difference has driven up the price of these cards immensely, and despite going for under two dollars in its normal state, Pokemon Prices has the card record of a misprint selling for over $2200 dollars.

Find The Set The Card Belongs To

Are Japanese Pokemon Cards Worth Investing In or Not ?!?!?!

If there is no logo on the right side, its Base. Every other set has an indicator.

When looking into what set a card belongs to, make sure to see if there is any logo on the right side, just underneath and to the right of the illustration. If there is no symbol, the likelihood is that its a Base set card.

There have been error cards that do not have a symbol, so make sure the year matches with the set.

Psa 10 Holo Rayquaza Gold Star Ex Deoxys: $37420

If Charizard is the king of Pokemon, Rayquaza is definitely up there in the royal family. It tends to value highly in any set it appears in, but none are as rare as EX Deoxys’ Rayquaza Gold Star, which only has 56 verified PSA 10 quality cards in circulation, putting it on par with the famous Holo Base Set Shadowless Charizard.

The PSA values PSA 10-grade Gold Star Rayquazas at an incredibly high $40,400. Auctions can swing wildly either side of that price, too. In 2021 alone, there were three up for sale by Goldin Auctions, with the highest selling for $44,280 and the lowest for $34,440.

Pokmon Japanese Base Set Holo Charizard No Rarity Arita Autograph

Japanese Hypno Holo Rare Pokemon Card No.097 Fossil Pocket Monster ...

Unlike the Charizard card above, this is the Japanese version of the 1996 Pokémon Base Set Holo Charizard. Its an important piece of Pokémon and trading card history and differs from the English edition in several ways. This includes the absence of a rarity symbol but the addition of the trademark cosmos holofoil pattern. There are 32 PSA 9 copies worldwide, but only seven of the highly coveted PSA 10s, making this a truly rare and expensive Pokémon. Anime sequels such as Dragon Ballz and Pokemon have been in the anime industry for over a decade and have amassed a substantial fan base worldwide. Skyridge Holographic Crystal Charizard

Besides having arguably the best artwork of any Charizard card, 2003s Skyridge Holo Crystal Charizard is notable for being a part of the last set produced by Wizards of the Coast when interest in the game started to wane. Due to the lessened interest in the game at the time, fewer sets were produced, making this card even rarer.

As of writing, there are just 211 mint condition copies of this card graded by PSA. The value of this card has skyrocketed with the recent surge in interest around the hobby .

To date, the highest sale of this card was for $28,100 in November 2020.

Is there a chans-ey you have this card in a shoebox somewhere?

Why Are Japanese Pokmon Cards Worth Less Money

Japanese Pokémon cards are worth a bit less money in the U.S because U.S collectors tend to collect English cards first. The Booster Box prices and Booster packs are also less expensive than their English counterpart.

That being said, the market fluctuates and Japanese rare Pokémon cards, especially EX cards still fetch a good price in the U.S.

/10 3vs3 Dugtrio Team Battle Extra Rule

In Japan, some Pokemon cards have been exclusive to vending machines, such as the Extra Rule cards. Extra Rule cards have the players add a rule at the beginning of their match, ranging from playing with fewer prize cards to switching their decks.

The most interesting of the Extra Rule cards is 3vs3 Dugtrio Team Battle, named after the three-headed Ground-type Pokemon, which has two three-person teams playing against each other in one-on-one battles, with whichever team wins twice being considered the winner. The card doesn’t do anything to change the rules of battle, but it at least adds a fun team element to the game.
