Rare And Valuable Pokemon Cards

Black Star Ishihara Signed Gx Promo Card

Pawn Stars: HYPER RARE ERROR Makes Pokemon Card Extra Valuable (Season 20)

A card featuring the Pokémon Company’s President himself.

Sold for $247,230 in April 2021

The most recent card to make headlines for pure value, this card sold for nearly a quarter of a million dollars at auction on April 26th 2021. You can find the full details at our story here, but this card depicts Pokémon Company founder and current president Tsunekazu Ishihara, and was given to the company staff as a celebration of the man’s 60th birthday in 2017.

That makes the card rare, but this specific version is even rarer, as Ishihara actually signed this near-mint card to boost its price even further. The “2017 P.M. SM Black Star #TPCi01 Tsunekazu Ishihara Signed Pokémon GX Promo Card”, to use its full title, is a testament to the raw power apparently held by the Pokémon president. The ability “Red Chanchanko” is in reference to the red vest traditionally worn on 60th birthdays in Japan, and prevents the effect of any attack, ability or trainer card against Ishihara. Meanwhile, its GX move “60 Congratulations”, tells you to flip 60 coins, and take a present for each one. A truly legendary card.

Pokemon Pop Series 5 Gold Star Umbreon

Sold in December, 2020 for $20,000

To help boost participation in Pokemon leagues and Pokemon Organized Play events, players were treated to exclusive POP series cards released on a regular basis over roughly a five-year span.

POP Series 1 kicked things off around September 2004 with POP Series 9 bringing things to a close around September 2009.

Released between March 2007 and September 2007, POP Series 5 was the last EX Series promotional set and featured Espeon and Umbreon, two of the eight Pokemon that evolve from Eevee.

The POP Series 5 checklist contained seventeen cards in total with Epseon and Umbreon being the most elusive of them all, noted by the gold star distinction next to their name on the card fronts.

As of this writing, just fifty examples of this Umbreon card have achieved PSA 10 status.

Pokmon Silver Tempest Secret Rare Lugia V Alternate Art Card

The most valuable Pokémon Silver Tempest card is easily the Alternate Art Lugia V, which is already fetching incredible prices on the second-hand market. On eBay, the rare Lugia holographic has been selling for as much as $355, almost double the value of any other collectible on this list. Given the cards already explosive value, fans can expect this Secret Rare to reach as high $600 in perfect graded condition. The Lugia V is on a similar trajectory as the Alternate Art Eevee cards from the Pokemon Evolving Skies TCG expansion, which are now selling for between $800 and $1,000. The Silver Tempest Lugia easily has the potential to become one of the Pokemon Trading Card Game‘s most valuable Galar era collectibles, due to its stunning artwork.

The Most Valuable First Edition Pokmon Cards Of All

Its amazing to think that a set that is barely 20 years old will sell for millions if youre looking at a complete collection of pristine graded cards.

The original 1999 release is definitely the pinnacle for now, and they look unlikely to be beaten anytime soon.

There are a couple of decent options from 2000 onwards, but they just cant compete with the popularity of the original 151.

The Charizard was always the chase card, but its still insane to think that it could be bought for less than $10,000 back in 2016. What will the value be in 2026?

Tropical Mega Battle Tropical Wind Promo

  • Release Date: 1999
  • Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
  • Pokemon card value at auction: $65,100

While not the most flashy Pokemon card on the list, the Tropical Mega Battle promo is an absolute holy grail for Psyduck fans. It doesnt get more adorable than seeing the Water-type mon playing the ukulele while chilling in a hammock with Jigglypuff.

Long before The Pokemon Company solidified the TCG competitive scene into the World Championships in 2004, one of Japans earlier iterations of the contest was known as the Tropical Mega Battle. In 1999, the tournament was held in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Only 50 players from various countries around the world were invited to compete against one another. Because various Trophy Pokemon cards were given out at the event, the Tropical Wind iteration is incredibly unique. The collectible resurfaced in a PWCC auction in October 2020 and sold for a mouth-watering $65,100.

Summer Battle Road Holo Victory Orb

Estimated Average Market Value $12,000
Estimated Copies Worldwide 160

The Japanese Promotional Victory Orb card was given to the winners of the Battle Road Summer Tournaments.

Because these cards were only given to the champions of each tournament, they are exceedingly rare, with only perhaps 160 copies in total ever being printed around the time of the tournaments.

You wont often see this card on live listings, but when you do, it doesnt stick around for long.

What Makes A Pokmon Card Valuable

Pokémon cards are a lot more complex than they appear. Plenty of small details that might seem insignificant could be the difference between a card being worth a few bucks or the down payment on a new house.

While there are a lot of factors that go into how collectors value a Pokémon card, you dont need to be as clever as Professor Oak to understand them.

Heres a basic breakdown for newbies.

Holographic Masters Scroll Card

My Secret Rare Pokemon Card Collection

The Pokémon Daisuki Club is Japans official Pokémon fan club which awards points to members for competing in tournaments and participating in the community . Players can turn in these points to obtain exclusive cards that arent available anywhere else.

In 2010, the Pokémon Daisuki Club offered this exclusive Masters Scroll card to players for 8,600 points. The exact number of copies of this card is unknown, but we do know that only 26 have earned a PSA 10 grade.

Since 2020 this card has consistently sold at auction for over $24,000, with the highest sale to date at $35,200.

First Edition Shadowless Base Set Charizard

A card that needs no introduction, and what is for many, the pinnacle of the hobby. This Charizard card is by far the most valuable and sought by Pokemon card collectors, and for good reason too

Backstory

Lets be honest, 1st Edition Base Set Shadowless Charizard is a badass card!

The famous artwork breathing fire. The powerful 100 point Fire Spin coupled with the 120 HP. The subtle first edition stamp and shadowless border. Its just a masterpiece!

But its not just that, that makes it so valuable

As a kid, you were king of the playground with one of these in your pocket. It felt like you won the lottery if you pulled it from a pack. You could boss the TCG if you had one in your deck.

This card is worth so much because of the way it made you feel. And the way it makes you feel today.

Its nostalgic value is synonymous with its real world value.

Its no surprise that even celebrities who grew up in the Pokemon era, use their fat stacks to rebuy a piece of their childhood.

Logic the rapper famously purchased a copy in 2020 through Auction House Iconic Auctions for $183,812 .

And more recently Logan Paul wore his copy around his neck for his ring walk to face Floyd Money Mayweather in their recent exhibition match.

For many, this is THE CARD to collect, and its easy to see why.

/10 Wizards Of The Coast Promo

Back when Wizards of the Coast used to make Pokemon cards, they had a track record of releasing some iconic promo cards for some of the franchise’s most beloved Pokemon. It should come as no surprise that a promo card for Venusaur that was reminiscent of Erika’s Venusaur was among the releases.

This card currently fetches about $65. Scarcity is the ally of value, and in this case, it’s super hard to track down this promo independently without the aid of an official shop.

Black Triangle Base Set Booster Pack

The rare Black Triangle Base Set Booster Pack is testament that not all manufacturing processes go to plan. When Wizards of the Coast realised they had accidentally printed too many Base Set booster packs branded with the first-edition logo, they covered the errant symbol with a small black triangle. A simple attempt to avoid wasting resources has generated a much-prized collectors item, as fans now collect the packaging of these old boosters.

But its the packaging itself thats valuable, not the cards inside, so dont go cracking one of these black triangle packs open if you happen to find one sitting in the back of a drawer. But theyre occasionally found in standard Base Set booster boxes so youll have to weigh up whether to gamble on the chance discovery of one of the black triangle booster packs, or whether its best to leave the box unopened for its pristine value. Some of the black triangle booster packs have fetched over $2,700 / £2,000 on eBay, depending upon their condition and which Pokémon is displayed on their cover.

Pokmon Neo Revelation 1st Edition Holo Houndoom #8

The 20 Rarest Pokemon Cards Of All Time

Neo Revelation is a 66-card expansion that was released back in 2001.

Weve mentioned that dark Pokémon were overpowered at the time, but they were also unique enough to stand out from the crowd compared to normal types that had been seen before.

Houndoom is one such example, with the card wrapped in a distinctive black background.

Youll be able to see advancements in terms of the illustration compared to the base 1999 set, as Houndoom howls at the moon in the image. Rather than a full holo background, only the stars glitter in the light.

Another expensive option, its limited to only 28 PSA 10 copies. Thats low enough to allow it to mix with the rarest original Pokémon cards.

The Pikachu Illustrator Card

The Pikachu Illustrator card is the rarest and most valuable Pokemon card in existence. Only 39 of these cards were ever made, and they were only given out to participants of certain Pokemon illustration contests.

In 2014, one of these cards was sold at an auction for $100,150 – making it the most valuable Pokemon card ever sold. The Pikachu Illustrator card is so valuable because it is incredibly rare and because it is a highly sought-after collector’s item.

Collectors will pay a premium for a card that is both rare and desirable, and the Pikachu Illustrator card fits that bill perfectly. If you’re lucky enough to own one of these cards, you can be sure that it is worth a small fortune.

Hisuian Samurott Vstar $4385

The only starter Pokemon to appear on this list is the one that received the least hype in the run-up to Legends: Arceus launch. Despite that, people really want the gold rare version of Samurott in particular. It is one of the few cards where the gold style actually works in its favour, though, with the outlining helping the dark blues and reds pop even more.

Samurott is great for sweeping large Pokemon out of the way through its Merciless Blade attack. Dealing 220 damage to an already-damaged Pokemon will often be enough to knock it out, but if it isnt youve always got its VSTAR power, Moon Cleave Star, to help finish them off.

Top 10 Most Valuable Rainbow Rare Pokémon TCG Cards! (Most Expensive) (Time to Invest?)

Perspective is important in the world of trading cards, and though the FireRed & LeafGreen Venusaur card isn’t the best-looking card, its value is undeniable. Yes, it may go for $200 on average, but the impressive thing is that a moderate quality version of this card sells for $110, which is more than the Base Set 2 version of Venusaur.

The FireRed & LeafGreen set was released in 2004 to coincide with the releases of the iconic Kanto region remakes of the original two games, which were Pokemon Red & Pokemon Blue in the United States.

How To Cash In On Your Pokemon Cards

Now that youve gone through your cards and identified which may have value, its time to see how much theyre actually worth and put them up for sale.

As you might expect, one of the easiest ways to check the value of a card is to look it up on an auction site like eBay. Make sure to look at completed listings to see how much the card actually sold for.

Other useful sites are ones like TCGPlayer and TrollAndToad, which act as digital storefronts for game shops and individuals selling cards. Once you look up a card, you can check the Market Price for an idea of how much its currently worth. Like eBay, these sites allow you to sell your cards for a fee.

Once you know how much your cards are worth, you can either make a listing on one of these sites to sell them, or you could visit a card shop or flea market to haggle in person, whatever it takes to get the very best price for your Pokemon cards.
