How To Effectively Sell Your Pokemon Cards

Pokemon But Cards Decide My Shiny Hunt

If you are looking to sell your Pokemon cards, there are a number of things that you can do to help increase the quote you receive and maximize your return. Simply put, the more organized and detailed information you can provide about your collection, the quicker and easier it will be to get a higher quote. Stores want to know exactly what you have, and dont want to spend hours sorting through your collection. If you decide to not organize your collection then that may highly impact the amount you receive. A detailed list of high value cards, well organized, versus a large cardboard box filled with who knows what. Makes sense right?

So how can you go about organizing your collection? A good starting point would be by set. This will break the collection up into smaller chunks . This will make it easier to pick out and identify the high value cards from that set. Having a full set, well organized in excellent condition might also generate a bit of a premium overall which is nice. The next step would be to organize the cards by rarity

Do Pawn Shops Buy Pokemon Cards

Pawn shops do buy Pokemon cards in some cases, but we dont recommend selling them there. Unless the pawn shop is known to specialize in trading card games, chances are high the clerk wont know the ins and outs of Pokemon card trading. So you can expect a lowball offer.

If you want to sell them locally and in-person, try comic book shops or hobby shops instead.

Should You Invest In Pokmon Cards

According to a report by eBay, Pokémon trading cards are the most traded cards on the site. More popular than sports cards! A 1999 Charizard card sold for over $350,000! The report goes on to say that the trend is expected to continue to grow.

Does this mean you should invest in Pokémon cards?

Its definitely worth investing in Pokémon cards. Rare and collectible cards will likely hold their value and even increase further.

You dont need much knowledge to get started. Provided you are prepared to do some research before buying or selling any cards you should be OK. Most cards can be checked online to find out if they are or will become valuable.

Like all investments, there is a risk of losing money. You could buy a card for more than its worth or trading cards may suddenly become unpopular. These things are possible, but the evidence shows that trading cards are here to stay and becoming ever more popular!

Low Print Run Charizards

Rare gyarados Pokemon card in LE2 Leicester for £10.00 for sale

Again, this circles back to the general subject of supply and demand. Put a very popular Charizard card with low print runs into the market and its going to be worth money.

Were always buying all types of Charizard cards that are from low and high print runs, this is simply because we love collecting Pokemon cards.

One of the lowest print runs is arguably the 1st edition Pokemon cards from base set. While there were no official numbers ever released to the public, its known to be one of the shortest print runs for Pokemon.

Is It Really Worth Selling Pokmon Cards

Absolutely, yes! You may not have rare cards worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, but a good collection of Pokémon cards could fetch a few thousand dollars.

Bryson Kliemann was able to raise several hundred dollars selling his small collection of Pokémon cards. He did so well that the Pokémon Company sent him more cards. Plus, he was able to pay his dogs vet bill!

How To Tell If Your Pokmon Card Is Valuable Or Not

Pull out your card and look in the bottom right corner to locate the rarity symbol. Itll be right next to the card number. For example, a diamond is for uncommon cards, while a circle is for very common ones. Common cards are very easy to get, and theyre usually on the lower end of the price range unless they are a 1999 or 2000 edition.

The black symbol that youll see in the bottom corner of the card tells you how rare it is. For example, a diamond is uncommon, a circle is common, and a star is rare. The star is traditionally black, but cards can come with stars in different colors. For example, a card with a gold or white star means that its very rare.

Now that you know how rare your card is, you want to check the condition. People wont spend a massive amount of money on cards that have tears or are in rough shape. Some online sites for selling cards have databases that will list common card prices. Some will even let you go through an automated system to find the card you want to find an approximate value.

Help Is My Charizard Fake

Good news, Ill start by saying there is a good chance your Charizard is real. If its fake, aka a proxy card, its worth $0. Weve handled literally millions of Pokemon cards during our time collecting. If theres one thing were good at, its spotting a fake Pokemon card.

We have seen nearly every single fake counterfeit Charizard 1st edition card under the sun.

Seeing images over a computer screen can sometimes be difficult when determining authenticity. Thats why when we get offered a Pokemon collection we cant offer our best price until we see the cards in hand.

While it may be second nature for us to spot them out, we wanted to take some time and put together this guide to help you spot fake Pokemon cards and better educate yourself.

If your Charizard is any/all of the following, your bill is fake:

  • Its laminated
  • It feels like printer paper
  • Its smaller than Pokemon today
  • Its much bigger than Pokemon today
  • It does not have a holographic layer
  • It looks blurry
  • It doesnt feel like a Pokemon card

There are many other factors that go into finding out if a Charizard card is fake or real. These are the quick indicators that are easiest to spot when first learning.

First edition Charizard cards are typically the most highly counterfeited Pokemon cards in the world. This comes as no surprise when it is one of the most sought-after Pokemon cards in the game.

What Are The Rarity Symbols On Pokmon Cards

My Biggest Pokemon Card Buy

Before we start discussing which stores sell Pokémon cards, you need to understand how to evaluate the cards. And there are four types of cards that are mostly in demand among collectors around the globe.

  • First-Edition Cards: These were first printed in 1999 as the base set with the Edition 1 logo at the bottom-left corner of the Pokémon illustration.
  • Holographic Cards: These cards have a shimmery and reflective top and a base layer that create a holographic effect.
  • Reflective Cards: These are also called inverse holographic cards as they reproduce a shining effect.
  • Full-Art Cards: Especially loved by the art-connoisseurs, these cards have a complete extended illustration throughout the front panel.

Besides these variants and editions, there are three symbols that you can find in every official Pokémon card that also denotes its rarity.

  • Circles: This sign is there in all the inexpensive and ordinary cards.
  • Diamonds: Although they are not extremely rare, these cards are quite valuable.
  • Stars: This particular mark comes in all the most valuable, rarest, and most expensive ones.

Special Note: If you have an entire deck and the card count is higher than the usual number, you have a secret card in that pack. And trust me, those secret cards are the actual collectibles that fetch unbelievable prices.

Rarity Symbols On Pokmon Cards

All Pokémon cards have a symbol that indicates how uncommon they actually are. You can find it in the bottom right corner of the card. The three main rarity symbols are:

  • Circles: This symbol means the card is ordinary.
  • Diamonds: This symbol means the card is pretty uncommon.
  • Stars: This symbol means the card is rare and more valuable.

If your cards collector number is higher than the actual number of cards in the deck, its probably a secret card, which means it will sell for more money.

How To Sell Your Pokmon Cards

Okay, so now you have some places to sell your cards.

But how do you even go about getting started if you have a pretty large collection?

Well, youll want to make sure that you organize them!

A buyer on eBay is going to be more impressed with an organized collection, rather than an old, disorganized box of cards.

Organizing your collection not only makes it more sellable, but it also makes listing stuff for sale easier because youll know exactly what you have in your collection.

In this section, Ill give you some tips for organizing and selling your Pokémon card collection.

Now, before we begin, I just want to note that these tips will help you when selling across multiple platforms, like eBay and Craigslist.

But, some of the sites above may have their own rules for how they want you to organize your cards. So make sure you read the fine print first to see if a site has any particular requirements when it comes to how they want you to organize their cards.

If not, then follow the tips below.

What Are Pokmon Expansion And Booster Packs My Kid Is Asking For Them

Magichamp Fusion GX Full Art Holo Custom Orica Pokemon Card

An expansion is a new set of cards released within a certain generation or series. Each expansion release includes about 100-200 new cards. There is no way to purchase an entire expansion all at once. Instead, you purchase them in booster packs, which are sets of 10 cards that you can use to add to your current collectionusually these are themed within a specific expansion, meaning that the cards inside can be any of the cards that were released within that expansion set. Current expansions include Sword Shield Rebel Clash and Sword & Shield Darkness Ablaze. A new expansion, Sword & Shield Vivid Voltage is set to come out in November 2020. Older expansion packs that your kid might still be after include ones from previous generations like Sun & Moon, XY, Black & White, Diamond & Pearl or the EX series.

Graded Card Tracking Tools

An alternative option when selling your Pokemon cards is to grade them first.

Ive written extensively on the topic, so you might find these articles useful if youre new to the grading process.

Ultimately, by grading them you can potentially add value to the cards and sell them for more in the long-term.

Note: Grading cards takes a long time. Because there was such an increase in popularity, grading companies have a large backlog to work through. If you want to sell your cards imminently, this probably isnt for you. However, if youre willing to wait, this has the potential to make a greater return further down the line.

Once youre cards have returned, again you can look at eBay last sold prices, but theres another tool Im very fond of too.

PokemonPrice.com allows you to see how much particular PSA graded cards sold for, and it tracks the sales over time.

For example, here are the recent sales for a 1st Edition Base Set Alakazam Holo card.

Note the PSA grade in column two, and the sold price in column 3.

In my opinion, this is an incredibly useful tool for getting an idea of how much your cards might be worth if graded. The only caveat is that the Pokemon card market fluctuates, and just because cards sell for this price now, it doesnt mean they will when you finally get your cards back.

However, if youve got cards that match 2 or 3 of the criteria below, I would probably get it graded. Personal opinion of course!

Protect Your Pokmon Cards

With any luck, your Pokémon cards were already stored in protective sleeves to keep them from deteriorating. If not, take the time to keep your cards safe immediately while you move through the remaining steps of selling them. Next to rarity, overall condition is another critical factor in the value of any collectible card. Youll want to start with soft penny sleeves and then store each card in its sleeve in a plastic card sheet that you can sort into a hard-cover binder. Those three layers of protection will help keep your cards safe from the tell-tale signs of wear, like dents, nicks, scratches, fading, water damage, bending, etc. If you do end up deciding to have your cards graded by professionals, investing in a system to keep them in the best condition possible will serve you well.

Top Tips In This Article

Scott Pratte, our expert card trader and collector, provided lots of tips to make money selling Pokemon cards. Here is his best advice:

  • First edition or New Edition? All kidding aside, we know that you know New Edition is a boy band from the 70s and 80s. Still, you need to know what you have in that box of Pokemon cards. In other words, which are the rare cards and which are not. Do you have one of the original holographic cards? Cha-ching.
  • Whats the condition of your cards? If theyve been under the bed in a box so light didnt fade them or the dog didnt get to them, you may be in good shape. Never taken out of the wrapper? More cha-ching. That is whats called mint. All cards in good condition are likely worth more than what you paid for them.
  • The best place to sell Pokemon cards? Its eBay all the way. It would be great to sell one card for oodles of money and eBay has facilitated some of that. But if you want a big audience and buyers willing to shell out $30 a pop for your cards, you can rack up sales.
  • Think youve got something valuable? Consult the Professional Sports Authenticator and get an estimate. This will put you in a good position to haggle with a buyer, which you should expect to do.

What Makes A Pokmon Card Valuable

I Traded My Pokemon Cards with Fans From This Binder!

Pokémon card value is typically determined by its rarity and condition. The rarer the card is, the more it will be worth. Likewise, cards that are in mint condition cost a lot more than cards that have been worn and torn throughout the years. You can determine if a Pokémon card is valuable by looking at the amount of shadowing on the card, a first edition indicator, card number, and year the card was made.

Buying And Selling Pokmon Cards

Understanding Pokémon cards will help you spot a valuable card. The first thing you should check is if the card says 1st Edition. 1st Edition means the card was printed in the 1st run of that set.

Rarity will make a card more valuable. 1st Edition or Stars usually signifies the card is rare. Depending on the card you will find symbols or numbers in the bottom right-hand corner to indicate rarity.

Next, is the card holographic? Every set has 1 rare card which is often the holographic one. The rare card isnt always holographic, but its a good sign to look for.

Card condition is another key factor in determining value. A card that is bent, scratched, creased, and shows other signs of damage will be of lower value than a card in pristine condition. If you have Pokémon cards make sure you keep them in immaculate condition!

To sum up, these are the things to look out for when buying and selling Pokémon cards:

  • What theme deck is the card from?
  • Is the card a 1st edition?

If you find a Pokémon card that ticks all these boxes, then it could be worth thousands of dollars!
