Creatures, Inc. is an often-overlooked arm of the Pokemon machine. The developer has worked on spin-off Pokemon games for years, starting with Pokemon Stadium in 1998 and the more recent Detective Pikachu on 3DS–as well as 3D Pokemon models for various games, including Super Smash Bros. But the company is also responsible for much of the Pokemon Trading Card Game, which consistently sees new series and expansions after over 20 years.
We had a chance to tour Creatures Inc.’s Tokyo, Japan office in 2018 to learn about the process of creating Pokemon cards. During our tour, we spoke to Atsushi Nagashima, game director for the TCG, and Mitsuhiro Arita, a longtime freelance illustrator responsible for over 500 Pokemon cards–including the infamous holographic Charizard card–about how cards are conceived and then illustrated. We also talked to Satoru Inoue, the test room lead at Creatures, about how cards are playtested and how balance problems and broken cards are addressed by the team.
There are three main parts to making a new Pokemon card: coming up with the idea for the card, commissioning art, and testing the card with the current TCG rules. This involves a team of game designers, over 70 artists, and 19 playtesters working full time to create and execute new card series and expansions.

ThisFusion Strike Pokémon boasts a powerful attack that is reminiscent of Zacian V‘s Brave Blade. In fact,the base damage of Techno Blast is the highest of all the Fusion Strike Pokémon,which means Genesect V is a priority partner for Mew VMAX.
However, most of the excitement for thiscard is focused on its Ability. Fusion Strike System enables the player to drawcards until the number of cards they have in their hand is equal to the numberof their Fusion Strike Pokémon in play. This Ability can be used once per turnfor each Genesect V in play, which makes it possible to draw nearly half thedeck in a single turn! Before we start, well say it again: Conducting all of these steps properly requires that youve got a few real Pokémon cards on hand, for comparison.
They dont have to be authentic copies of the specific card youre testing but its useful to have a selection of different card types, so you have a quick visual reference for what each element looks like on the real thing.

Pokemon Snap Trainer Magazine Pikachu: $900
If you were a Pokemon fan back in the days of the Nintendo 64 console, you might just remember the classic spin-off game Pokemon Snap. The object of this Pokemon spin-off was to snap creative in-game photos of various creatures, and there were several tie-in cards in Japans Pokemon Trainer Magazine to help increase the hype among fans to try this new game.
This card was a Pikachu card with the model from Pokemon Snap as the art, making for a relatively hilarious-looking card that only could be found within this magazine in 1999. Miyabihobby has a record of an unopened magazine being sold for 100,000, or about $900 USD, but PSA Card has records of auctions ranging between $300 and $1000 for perfect condition grades.

Other Tips For Identifying Fake Pokemon Cards
There are many different production methods for fake trading cards, including Pokémon TCG cards, each with their own tell-tale signs that differentiate the product from the genuine article which means no one guide to identifying fakes can contain every possible red flag. Here are a few pointers on what to do if youre not sure about a card.
If, for some reason, youre looking at a Pokémon card to buy, but you cant physically hold and inspect the card for yourself , always ask the seller to take an original, high quality photo of both sides of the card for you. This should let you carry out all but the material-based tests, and allows a good deal of confidence the card is real.
Check To Make Sure The Fronts Of Modern Ultra Rare Cards Are Textured
Ultra rare cards including VMAX cards, Full Art Supporter cards, and Secret Rares now feature textured fronts. The pattern of these textures varies from card to card, but the most common texture among modern cards coming out now appears to similar to small ridgesnot unlike the appearance of a fingerprint.
If you run your finger over this pattern, you will find that you can actually feel these ridges as well, but be very careful! Running your fingers across the surface of a card can leave oils, and even scratches.
It’s always best to use another method, such as looking at the edge to find the ink layer, rather than trying to detect texture through touch. But being aware of this indicator can be one more tool in your belt when it comes to spotting fake cards, especially when you’re, for example, purchasing a card online, and can’t necessarily inspect the edge yourself.

Pokemon German First Edition Glurak
Sold in January, 2021 for $37,000
If you come across a First Edition Charizard from the German release, you’ll notice that Charizard’s name is instead “Glurak.”
Also, unlike the English version, you’ll notice the First Edition German version is not shadowless.
That’s true of the other non-English first editions as well.
Of the 900 German first edition Gluraks that PSA has graded at the time of this writing, 50 have received the lofty PSA 10 distinction.
That’s about a 5.5% success rate compared to around 3.7% for the English first edition Charizards, making it relatively easier to find in that condition.
Shiny Secret Rare Charizard V: $500
If you want to get into Pokemon pack opening, but dont want to shell out for the older packs, there are tons of new cards with similar record-setting prices that have come out in just the past two years. One of the recent premium TCG sets in the game was Champions Path, and certain cards in it were especially rare since you could only get packs through special products like Elite Trainer Boxes and Pin Collector packs.
