Pokmon Japanese Promo Tamamushi University Magikarp Trophy Card $66100

This $400 Pokemon Box has the COOLEST PROMO CARD!

Ah, Magikarp. The most useless Pokémon of all time has earned something of a cult following over the years, so its nice to see the fish recognized on this list. This card was given out to fans who scored well on something called the Tamamushi University Hyper Test which we imagine was some sort of Pokémon quiz. Owning this particular Magikarp can earn you a lot of money, and also prove your scholastic bona fides.

Pokmon World Championships No 1 Trainer

Every copy of this rare and valuable promo card is one-of-a-kind

Sold for $31,200 in April 2021

The first of two rare and valuable Pokémon cards called No. 1 Trainer on this list, this particular card was awarded to winners of the regional Battle Road Spring tournaments held in Japan during early 2002.

The regional tournaments were held as qualifiers for the Pokémon World Championships, with the small number of No. 1 Trainer cards produced for the few winners making them some of the rarest Pokémon cards in existence.

Adding to the cards rarity is the fact that each No. 1 Trainer card was customised with the name of the tournament winner printed onto the card, making each card one-of-a-kind. According to auction house Heritage Auctions, the personalised aspect of the cards also mean that they rarely appear at auction, making them an even rarer sight in the world of Pokémon cards.

The 2002 No. 1 Trainer card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, best known as being one of the original artists and designers for Pokémons first generation of 151 Pokémon. The text on it reads: The Pokémon Card Game Official Tournament Battle Road Spring 2002 champion is recognised here, and his honour is praised. Sugimoris No. 1 Trainer artwork featuring fan-favourite Pokémon such as Pikachu, Chansey and Marrill is exclusive to the card, making it especially unique.

Gold 1996 Pokemon Symbol Holo Venusaur

Amongst the most excellent costly Pokemon badges now are those from the shows original introduction in the 1990s, the original edition. A No Rarity Gold Venusaur card is quite valuable on its own, but the $55,000 it brought at auction in December 2021 established a new benchmark for the scarce Pokémon card.

The famed designer creating numerous Pokémon decks over the previous 20 years, Mitsuhiro Arita, signed the cards sleeve, bringing the final price to a new milestone. In the English version of the Pokémon card game, cards with the first generation stamps are greatly desired, however, in Korea, the oldest Pokémon decks may be distinguished by the fact that they do not have a stamping.

A Pokémon Residence permit that has been rated a faultless Gem-Mint 10 by PSA is quite hard to come by like the gold card value Charizard.

Which Pokemon Cards Are Valuable

Pokemon Single Promotional Card

Just because a card is rare, it doesnt necessarily mean that it is very valuable. A lot of variables determine the value of a card on the market. For instance, a holofoil card is generally more valuable than its regular counterpart. Competitively useful cards may also become expensive on the market. First-generation cards are hard to find, so even Common ones can fetch quite a bit of money. Collectors are especially fond of Alternate Art cards, so those tend to also be very valuable. Collectors love cards of popular Pokemon like Pikachu, Charizard, Mew, Mewtwo, Dragonite, and Lugia. Funny enough, cards with errors are also highly sought after. Over the years, spelling errors, misprints, and other mistakes have found their way onto some cards, and fans will fork out lots of money for these odd finds.

Tropical Mega Battle Tropical Wind Promo

  • Release Date: 1999
  • Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
  • Pokemon card value at auction: $65,100

While not the most flashy Pokemon card on the list, the Tropical Mega Battle promo is an absolute holy grail for Psyduck fans. It doesnt get more adorable than seeing the Water-type mon playing the ukulele while chilling in a hammock with Jigglypuff.

Long before The Pokemon Company solidified the TCG competitive scene into the World Championships in 2004, one of Japans earlier iterations of the contest was known as the Tropical Mega Battle. In 1999, the tournament was held in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Only 50 players from various countries around the world were invited to compete against one another. Because various Trophy Pokemon cards were given out at the event, the Tropical Wind iteration is incredibly unique. The collectible resurfaced in a PWCC auction in October 2020 and sold for a mouth-watering $65,100.

Tropical Mega Battle Tropical Wind Trainer Card

Sold in October, 2020 for $65,100

Just a bit ago, we saw how expensive the number two trainer card from the 1999 Pokemon Tropical Mega Battle could be even without a numerical PSA grade assigned to it.

And now we get a look at how expensive the trainer card given to all players who participated at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in 1999 can be if it’s graded to be in PSA 10 Gem Mint condition.

This card, featuring Psyduck and Jigglypuff laying sleepily in a hammock in a tropical setting, has become a hobby icon and one of the most sought-after trainer cards.

The “TRAINER” text across the top denotes the card type while the text below reads:

“Flip a coin. If heads, remove 2 damage counters from each active Pokemon . If tails, each active Pokemon is now asleep.”

How To Determine The Value Of A Pokmon Card

The value of any specific Pokémon card may fluctuate depending on the number of people there are that desire to obtain it. Fortunately, it’s much easier to determine the value of a collectible item than it once was, thanks to the internet.

There are several places to do research to find out the value of a Pokémon card:

Graded “Pokémon” Cards Usually Sell for Much More

The condition of a “Pokémon” card has a huge impact on the card’s value.

Having your “Pokémon” card professionally graded helps others know the true condition of a Pokémon Card.

The two companies most recognized that grade “Pokémon” cards are PSA & Beckett.

Pokmon Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless Holo Nidoking #11

Huge Pokémon Promo Card HAUL! (1998 to 2021)

A dual-type poison and ground Pokémon that is the evolved form of Nidoran, Nidoking is classed as a grass-type for the purposes of this card.

This means that it comes wrapped in the green background you would expect, although the foil is more reminiscent of a burning flame thanks to the orange and yellow that sparkles.

It might not have been the most popular Pokémon when it was originally released, but its one of the more valuable in the present day.

Just 90 have earned the elusive gem mint grade from PSA.

Pokmon Japanese Promo Kangaskhan

This holographic limited-edition Kangaskhan has an extremely charming origin story. In the late 90s, the Pokémon Company put on an event called the Parent/Child Mega Battle, where kids teamed up with their mothers or fathers and battled each other for true familial supremacy. Winners received this promo card as a trophy, making it one of the rarest pieces of cardboard ever to bear the Pokémon name. This Kangaskhan rarely comes up for auction, but when it does, expect to pay a pretty penny.

Are Pokemon Gold Cards Worth Anything

It was last years notable online celebrities and broadcasters that popularised the collecting of rare Pokemon collectibles by displaying their collections. Some people amass them as an asset for the future, whereas others buy them for a limited time and then dump them whenever their valuation skyrockets.

Because of this fad, the value of the first Pokemon collectibles has gone up and down. Some uncommon Pokemon cards have been added to the game after the list was first published, and they may be found in the latest current expansions.

The gold Pokemon card is one of a kind since it serves as the basis for all other localized editions of the same card. As a result, non-Japanese enthusiasts are fixated on securing items that will rarely be made available in their nations.

The introduction of extremely sought-after advertising decks in Japanese is one such incident. The earlier CoroCoro Shining Mew, the contemporary 15th Annual Full Art Pikachu, and the very latest Battle Festa Pikachu are all instances of such collectibles.

What Makes A Collectable Valuable

The value of collectible items depends on how many of the items there are and the number of people that desire to acquire them.

A collectible item that is too easy to obtain rarely has the value that an item that is difficult to obtain may have.

Items that are too rare may not have enough people that desire them to create a competitive market, and the item may not be as valuable as it may have been in the past.

Pokemon Ex Team Rocket Returns Torchic Gold Star

Sold in December, 2020 for $25,400

Released in 2004, the EX Team Rocket Returns set marked the seventh expansion from the EX Series and featured 111 cards in its checklist.

Three of the cards, #107 , #108 , and #109 , are special holographic shiny rare cards noted by the gold star next to their name.

First introduced in the third generation of Pokemon games, Torchic is one of the three starter Pokemon that originate in the Hoenn region.

This orange and yellow chick may look cute and cuddly, but make no mistake, this fire-type Pokemon can shoot fireballs at its enemies that will instantly leave them burnt to a crisp.

How Can I Tell If My Pikachu Card Is Worth Anything

You first need to identify which Pikachu card you have. Look for the numbers in the lower left or right corner and search them in Pokémon Wizard to find out what set it is from. This site will also give you an average market price, but the exact price really depends on the quality of your card. If your Pikachu card is valuable, you may want to send it to PSA for official verification and grading.

These cards were given to employees at The Pokemon Company to celebrate its founder and president Tsunekazu Ishihara’s 60th Birthday.

We don’t know exactly how many of these cards were produced, but one specific copy of it fetches a much higher price than the others. In April 2021, Goldin Auctions sold a copy of it that had been signed by Tsunekazu Ishihara himself for an eye-watering $247,230. The wildest thing? It wasn’t even PSA 10-graded, and managed to sell for that much with just a nine rating.

/30 World Championship Master’s Key

10 Expensive Pikachu Promo Cards! ($$$)

A copy of the Master’s Key card sold for more than $25,000 in August of 2020. Unlike most cards sold at auction, this one wasn’t graded by the PSA and was instead appraised by Beckett. Whether or not a copy still sealed in the original trophy case would have fetched more remains to be seen, though, given the card’s value, it’s perhaps a little surprising that the seller opted to open it up.

The Master’s Key was originally handed out to contestants at the 2010 Pokemon World Championships. The event took place in Hawaii and was contested by just 36 players. As a result, the card is incredibly rare, with only nine GEM-MT 10 copies – the highest grade that can be handed out by the PSA – in existence.

Find The Set The Card Belongs To

If there is no logo on the right side, its Base. Every other set has an indicator.

When looking into what set a card belongs to, make sure to see if there is any logo on the right side, just underneath and to the right of the illustration. If there is no symbol, the likelihood is that its a Base set card.

There have been error cards that do not have a symbol, so make sure the year matches with the set.

Pokemon Neo Destiny 1st Edition Shining Charizard

Sold in January, 2021 for $20,250

The fourth main expansion of the Neo Series, Neo Destiny, is notable for featuring both light and dark Pokémon whose characteristics and destiny are reflective of how a Trainer trains them.

Light Pokémon are caring and bright-spirited, while dark Pokémon are the exact opposite.

Dark Pokémon have appeared in several different series, but the Neo Destiny set is the only one in which you will find the light Pokémon.

Charizard appears as neither light nor dark in Neo Destiny but instead as a special Shining Charizard that gets its name from the unique foil design that glimmers and shines in the light.

The Shining Pokémon in this series also feature a unique rarity symbol in the lower right in the form of three stars.

Tamamushi University Magikarp: $50000

The Tamamushi University Magikarp card is so rare that despite the fact that it depicts a frankly awful Pokemon, its worth ridiculous sums of money. Why the high price? Well, the University Magikarp was a promotional card that saw very limited distribution at a Japanese tournament in the late 1990s.

In total, 1000 of the cards were produced but far fewer were actually awarded and many were just stowed away forever. Barely any of these rare Magikarp cards are still in circulation today, and its incredibly rare to see new ones show up. At the moment, PSA Cards Price Guide chart lists perfectly-preserved cards to have sold for around $50,000, while copies with NM-MT 8 ratings still sell for amazing heights of $12,000.

The Condition Of The Pokemon Card

Eevee V SWSH065 Holo Pokemon Promo Card (Sword & Shield Series)

Pokemon card collectors really care about the condition of the cards they buy.

Even just a few minor scratches on the card, or minor edgewear on its borders, can reduce the value of a Pokemon card significantly.

Pokemon card conditions are described in terms of how close to mint condition they are. Here are some common Pokemon card grades and what they mean.

Mint: flawless, looks like it was just pulled from a booster.

Near Mint: near to mint condition, except the card may have minor edge wear or surface scuffs from being stored in plastic sleeves.

Excellent : slightly worse than near mint, card may have more extensive edge wear or scuffs, may also have other marks. Still playable and collectable. No creases will be on the card.

Good : card may start to have creases, more damage or more major damage in extensive areas.

Played: card will have folds, splitting, peeling, big creases or major damage to many areas of the card.

This Base Set Charizard Pokemon card is in played condition due to the scratches on the front of the card and the edge wear visible on the borders.

Collectors are looking for near mint or mint condition Pokemon cards. If your card is in worse than near mint condition, this will reduce its value.

This isnt to say it isnt worth selling Pokemon cards that have been played with. Since old Pokemon cards are often slightly worn due to their age, these types of cards in particular can often still sell for decent money even if not in perfect condition.
