What Are My Pokemon 1st Edition Base Set Cards Worth

*ARE YOUR POKEMON CARDS VALUABLE?* How To Find Value!

If you own any of the cards listed below, condition is the biggest factor in figuring out your Pokemon card value. The prices below illustrate what these cards are worth after grading in mint condition as PSA 9’s & 10’s.

Important to note: It is very unlikely that your cards will grade this high if they have been played with. If you have these cards laying around in less than mint condition, it still may be worth getting them graded as long as they are in pretty good shape.

Does Topps Still Make Pokmon Cards

Today, TOPPS no longer makes Pokémon cards, as sales plummeted when the TCG gained popularity around the world. TOPPS Pokémon license for its entertainment products expired in 2008, with no intention for renewal, as they reported have experienced peaks and valleys of consumer interest. Find The Set The Card Belongs To

If there is no logo on the right side, its Base. Every other set has an indicator.

When looking into what set a card belongs to, make sure to see if there is any logo on the right side, just underneath and to the right of the illustration. If there is no symbol, the likelihood is that its a Base set card.

There have been error cards that do not have a symbol, so make sure the year matches with the set.

Squirtle First Edition $222

Squirtle is the first evolution of Blastoise and carries the 2nd most Pokemon card value of any of the big three pre-evolutions. Although grading has slowed down drastically, prices have dipped in the Pokemon market. That said, Squirtle is one of the essential characters of the show and is a must have for any collector. Be sure to assemble your Squirtle-Squad by acquiring his English Rookie card.

Identify The Card With The Name And Number In The Set

Pokémon Base Set 2 Starter Deck Set Trading Cards + Value Collector

Finally, identify the card by looking up its name and card number on eBay.

As previously described in step one, the name will be located above the illustration on the top left of the card. The number is on the bottom right of the card. This is the identifier for each year and set. For instance, there are 102 cards in the 1st Edition base set. Charizard is the 4th card in the set, so it’s listed as #4/102 on the card. In the above photo, Machamp is #8/102.

After checking all three of these steps, you should easily be able to identify every card, even if you dont know exactly what set it is in.

Pokmon The Movie 2000 Trading Cards

This set had 5 or 8 card booster packs each with a guaranteed holo. The packs containing rainbow foil cards could be identified by a Special Collectors Edition stamp on the pack itself, and also on the booster box. This set contains the now-famous Lugia card that is worth ~$2,000.

Another unique card from this set is the film frame cards that have authentic 35mm film reel frames built into the cards. These were very rare and each card has its own film cell. Because of this, according to the TOPPS company, no two cards are the same.

Pokémon the Movie 2000 Trading Cards contained:

  • 59 The Power of One cards
  • 12 Pikachus Rescue Adventure cards
  • 1 Checklist card
  • 10 Movie Scene Sticker cards
  • 6 First Appearance Hologram cards
  • An unknown number of Film Frame cards

Use The Above Details To Identify Your Card

You can use the first four steps as a checklist of sorts. Write down all of that information because once you have the character’s name, the set, the year, and the card number, you will be able to search for it on eBay and other websites that specialize in Pokemon cards to compare to your card.

When you are comparing, make sure that everything on the card is an exact match. It’s easy to miss something, but even the slightest variation can be the difference between the card being basically worthless, or potentially worth thousands of dollars.

Pokemon Card Set Symbols

Use this handy guide to look up Pokemon card set symbols, set names, and set years.

The most common way to organize Pokemon cards is by set. To identify the set, look for a little symbol at the bottom of the card, next to the card number. There are a bunch of these set symbols 5-6 sets are released every year, each with a different set symbol, and theyve been printing cards since 1999!

The following table is a complete list of Pokemon card sets, sorted by date the newest sets are at the top the oldest are at the bottom. If I missed something, let me know if the comments! I want this to be THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE FOR POKEMON CARD SETS!

Identify Type And Assess Rarity

I Visited The Worlds Best Pokemon Collection ($3 Million)

The first step to identify Pokemon card value is to check its type and rarity. In other words, how likely the card is to come across from any given booster pack or special event, and if it has any special characteristics, such as card material or Pokemon types.

There are a few indicators of rarity on any given card, though theyre quite subject to change depending on when said card was printed. A marker near the bottom of the card or near its name will indicate rarity: a circle means the card is common, a diamond means its less common, and stars mean its rare. More stars or with combinations of letters or symbols mean extra rare, including if those symbols are in the name or elsewhere on the card. Other characteristics that can up the rarity include: a higher printed number than there should be in a given printed set holographic artwork or reverse holographic, in which everything but the artwork is holographic artwork that takes up the full card artwork wherein the creature doesnt cast a shadow and any shining characteristics, not to be confused with holographic.

While rarity isnt the only factor in appraising value, its certainly a major factor: Some of the highest-selling cards worth tens of thousands of dollars, or considered priceless from lack of supply, are only so because of small rarities like misprints or typos.

Look Up Your Card On Ebay

Pokemon Card Price Guide // ONE37pm

Once you are certain that you have an exact match, you can now “comp” your card, which means that you can use the information you just collected to figure out what your card is worth.

Keep in mind, there is a major difference in value between a card that is gradedmeaning it is encased in plastic and given a score based on its conditionand a raw card that has not been graded. Even if you think that your card is in mint condition, it won’t sell for as much as a card that has been inspected and authenticated by one of the top grading services.

The Original Topps Cards

In March 1997 the first TOPPS cards were released in Japan only. Of course, the company was still called TOPSUN at the time, as they changed their name later on. The cards feature a Pokémon on the front and have only a pattern on the back that is TOPSUN repeated in Japanese. At the bottom of the face of the card, there is a 1995 copyright. This can be misleading as these cards are not from 1995, but 1997. The 1995 date is reflecting the date of the property of Pokémon itself, but TOPSUN actually filed its patent in 1997.

These cards were only available in packs of chewing gum, and only in the green apple flavor. There are only 150 cards, one for each Pokémon. Its important to remember that Mew did not yet exist, therefore there is no card for Mew.

There are two different variations of TOPSUN cards- blue-backs and green-backs. Blue-backs were released first and are much rarer than green-backs. There are also holo TOPSUN cards, but only 16 instead of the 150. These 16 holo TOPSUN cards, referred to as prism holos, were not only holo versions of the regular cards but featured more of a full art design on the front.

TOPPS continued to print and sell Pokémon cards after the success of the first set. From 2000 to 2003, TOPPS distributed Pokéon products in over 44 countries and 25 languages.

You can usually find really good deals on TOPSUN cards on eBay.

Looking Up How Much My Pokemon Cards Are Worth:

If you get too many results that include cards NOT like yours, use the checkboxes to pick the ones just like yours. Choosing a few comparable items by using the checkboxes gives you a much more accurate estimate of what your Pokemon card is worth.

What to do next:

Once youve gone through and searched for the value of your Pokemon cards using the mavin.io price guide, you have several different options:

If the Pokemon cards are valuable: You can either hold onto the cards, perhaps get them graded if theyre really valuable, and hopefully see them appreciate in value over time. Alternatively, you sell it to a local card shop without getting ripped off since you know its worth. Lastly, you can sell it yourself on eBay to get a competitive price. Read our guide to selling on eBay.

If the Pokemon cards are worthless: A card doesnt have to be worth money to be considered valuable. Each card has sentimental value to someone: where they got it, the deck it was a part of, that time you used it to battle so-and-so a lot of people tend to hang onto them because of the memories. If you want to get rid of your Pokemon cards, they could be worth some memories to a relative or a stranger. Put them on Craigslist, take them to a card shop, donate them, or pass them along to your kids or a relative. Theres still a lot of fun to be had in those dusty Pokemon cards youve been hanging onto!

Are Topps Cards Valuable

Most are not, but some are very valuable. Like any Pokémon card set, the rare ones have grown in value over the years while the common cards have not. Find The Year Your Pokemon Card Was Made

Look at the bottom of the card and find the year it was printed. Thats the second key indicator when identifying your card.

For example, the Base Set Pokémon Cards have 4 different print runs while looking almost identical each time. Of those sets, the UK 4th Print Base Set identifies as 1999-2000, which is the key indicator to separate those cards from the rest.

Some of the most common sets ever produced include Neo-Genesis, Aquapolis, and Sky Ridge. The most valuable cards are mainly from the 1999 1st edition base set, outside of the extremely rare promo and trophy cards.
