Super Secret Battle No 1 Trainer

*IS IT WORTH THE MONEY?* Walgreens Has New Pokemon Cards! (opening)

The answer to “What’s the rarest Pokémon card of all time?”

Sold for $90,000 in July 2020

Its unlikely youve heard of Super Secret Battle No. 1 Trainer, and extremely unlikely youve ever seen a copy in person. When it comes to rare Pokémon cards, there are very few cards rarer than this.

No. 1 Trainer is a holographic promotional card awarded to finalists in the Secret Super Battle tournament held in Tokyo, Japan in 1999. To earn a place in the competitions finals, which were held in a secret location, players had to first win a regional tournament. Their prize was the No. 1 Trainer card, which granted them access to the finals.

The cards text translates to: The Pokémon Card Game Official Tournament’s champion is recognised here, and this honour is praised. By presenting this card, you may gain preferential entry into the Secret Super Battle. The card features the Japanese logo for the Pocket Monsters Trading Card Game, along with artwork of original generation Pokémon Mewtwo by illustrator Hideki Kazama.

This is a card so rare and valuable that Indiana Jones probably had to escape a crumbling temple with it at some point. Its 1999 counterpart cards No. 2 Trainer and No. 3 Trainer, similarly awarded to winners in Japanese Pokémon tournaments during the late 1990s, are almost as rare and valuable.

Tamamushi University Magikarp Trophy

Card sale date: February 2021

Card selling price: $66,100

As a promotional card, this card was only awarded during a single 2-day event in 1998 held in Japan. To enter the competition, people had to complete a test called the Tamamushi University Hyper Test. After entries were received, 1,000 participants were selected to participate in the tournament, and those who won a battle got this card.

Magikarp normally cant learn Dragon Rage, a move it has on this card, but those who scored well on the first rendition of the test were given this Magikarp with Dragon Rage in their Pokémon video game as well.

Blastoise Cd Promo From The Pokmon Song Best Collection

In 1999, Japanese fans were able to buy the Pokémon Song Best Collection music CD. The album featured a compilation of songs from the Pokémon anime. The songs featured on the albums finalized tracklist were actually decided by Pokémon players who got to vote in a magazine poll. What made the album really collectible though, is that it also came packaged with a handful of rare Pokémon TCG promo cards such as Snorlax, Venusaur, and Charizard.

Pokémon Blue Box mascot Blastoise was also one of the cards included in the album and featured alternate artwork of his iconic Base Set card. The promos artwork is drawn by renowned Japanese artist Ken Sugimori, who created the designs for all the original 151 Pokémon in the Kanto PokéDex. Incredibly, the Blastoise CD Promo sells for just $50 ungraded on auction sites and only goes for around $350 for a perfect graded version. Considering this rare promo is from 1999, and features an alternate artwork from legendary illustrator Ken Sugimori, this is another card that should definitely be worth more in 2022.

What Are My Pokemon 1st Edition Base Set Cards Worth

If you own any of the cards listed below, condition is the biggest factor in figuring out your Pokemon card value. The prices below illustrate what these cards are worth after grading in mint condition as PSA 9’s & 10’s.

Important to note: It is very unlikely that your cards will grade this high if they have been played with. If you have these cards laying around in less than mint condition, it still may be worth getting them graded as long as they are in pretty good shape.

Pokemon Japanese Play Promo 50000 Points Espeon Gold Star

Sold in June, 2021 for $25,700

Earlier, we had a look at the 2005 Pokemon Japanese Play Jolteon gold star card that required 20,000 EXP Points to redeem and explained how difficult it was to achieve.

As Pokemon Players Club members completed specific actions, such as attending an event, winning a battle, or placing in a tournament, they could accumulate experience points.

As if accumulating 20,000 EXP points for the Jolteon wasnt hard enough, those who had the endurance and capability to press on even farther could unlock the Espeon after earning 50,000 EXP points.

The holographic element mixed with the gold star designation and incredible design from Masakazu Fukuda resulted in a breathtaking card that few ever have the chance at holding.

Pokemon First Edition Hitmonchan

Pokmon Tcg: Alternate Art Machamp V

Alternate Art Machamp V comes from the Astral Radiance set, and its price range hovers between $120 and $160. This is the only card in Astral Radiance that has stayed over $100, and even at its peak only reached $190. This is likely due to Machamp not being as popular of a Pokémon compared to Legendaries or iconic regular favorites like Charizard or the Eeveelutions.

Related: Why The Best Pokémon TCG Cards Aren’t The Most Valuable

Machamp is a slightly odd choice for popularity and likely relies on the success Pokémon TCG Alternate Art cards usually have. The success of this card relies on its creative Machamp idea surrounded by the warm background of a market. The only reason for collectors to hold onto this card would be personal preference, as this card likely has the least chance for a price rise on this list.

Newer Pokmon Cards Are Worth Hundreds Of Dollars

System For Ranking Pokmon Trading Cards

The Pokémon trading cards quickly became coveted collectors items, especially for diehard fans. The cards are marked with one of three symbols in the bottom-right corner:

  • Common cards have a black circle
  • Uncommon cards have a black diamond
  • Rare cards have a black star

But the ranking system doesnt stop there. There are also unique card designs.

Venusaur No Rarity Symbol Base Set

  • Release Date: 1996
  • Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
  • Pokemon card value at auction: $55,000

While the English version of the TCG Base Set had the coveted 1st Edition stamped cards, the original run of the 1996 Japanese release simply had no symbol at all. Called No Rarity, the scarce artifacts are truly the first Pokemon cards to ever be made.

A Venusaur from this original batch went up for sale at PWCC Auctions on November 18th, 2021, and sold for a jaw-dropping $55,000 a record for the beloved Kanto starter Pokemon. According to PSA, the grade 10 collectible is only one of 5 to exist in the entire world.

As if this collectors item wasnt special enough, the casing on the outside was also autographed by the cards original artist Mitsuhiro Arita. This is truly a one-of-a-kind artifact that any Venusaur fan would die to have in their collection.

/30 No Rarity Venusaur

No rarity cards came about as the result of a printing error, with some copies of the early Japanese base set cards missing the little black star from the bottom right-hand corner. This makes them highly desirable with collectors, as evidenced by a copy of the card selling for $55,000 in November of 2021.

The card in question was one of only five PSA 10 rated copies of the card in existence and, as the PSA has now stopped grading this particular card variant, that number is unlikely to increase anytime soon. Just to add to its rarity, the record-holding card was also signed by illustrator Mitsuhiro Arita, though, thankfully, only on its protective case rather than the actual card itself.

Rayquaza Gold Star Holo Ex Deoxys

*IS IT WORTH THE MONEY?* Costco Has New Pokemon Cards! (opening)
  • Release Date: 2005
  • Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
  • Pokemon card value at auction: $45,100

An early favorite of Ruby & Sapphire, Rayquaza has seen an uptick in popularity over the last decade. So it makes sense then that its cards would also start to climb up in value over time. In 2005, The Pokemon Company released the Ex Deoxys TCG expansion featuring the Flying / Dragon-type.

As a gimmick to get Pokemon card collectors interested in the set, the Japanese company introduced Gold Star Pokemon cards into the hobby. As mentioned earlier, the incredibly rare Pokemon cards featured a special symbol next to the name of the mon. Of course, the king of these marked collectibles is the Hoenn Legendary itself.

In December 2020, a perfectly graded Gold Star Rayquaza sold at auction for $45,100. Given the Legendarys continued popularity in the franchise, and just how few of the gold Pokemon cards were actually produced, we expect this item to increase in value as time goes on.

Most Expensive Pokmon Cards In Review

Clearly, the non-sports card collecting world is every bit as hot as the sports card hobby.

Passionate collectors are obviously willing to shell out big bucks to land any one of the prized possessions on this list.

The video games, television shows, and the cards themselves transformed Pokémon into a worldwide phenomenon with an enormous fan base.

And many of those kids who grew up with these cards are now adults with more spending power able to pay big bucks for them in top condition.

It doesnt look like that trend will slow anytime soon as these cards have found their place as one of the most popular non-sports sets in the hobby.

Not Great Price But It Is Reliable And And Easy

Pokemon Charizard VMAX 020/189

I scanned 50 codes and got $2.50 cents which honestly isnt great thats about half the codes are worth but at the end of the day if you are gonna sell codes you have to do all this stuff that takes a lot of effort, like shipping them on eBay or meeting someone in person. But with this you simply scan em and send em off and a few hours later your PayPal gets the money. Also free codes on the internet are not hard to find as well so this could be a side hustle. Overall though its quick easy and reliable just they only give you 50% of what a normal person would.

Neo Summer Battle Road No 2 Trainer Trophy

Card sale date: March 2021

Card selling price: $34,100

Becketts only gave this card a 7.5, or Near Mint+ rating, but it is the attribute that reduces its rating that makes it so valuable. This card was earned by the No. 2 Trainer during the 2002 Neo Summer Battle Road tournament. The Junior Division second place winner, Fukunishi Tomoki, wrote his name on the back of the card. The writing on the card, coupled with its scarcity, helped it fetch $34,100 at a PWCC auction.

Get The Cards Condition Graded By The Psa

Lets say you find your old cards and come face-to-face with a 1st Edition Chancey card worth up to $3,500. Sweet!

Now, how do you sell it?

Your first step will be to temper your expectations. Although auction sites will list estimated values of thousands of dollars, the resale value at that moment in time could be 10x more or less than that.

In addition to checking TCGplayers, a good way to rapidly appraise your cards value is to browse recently sold listings on eBay. You can do so by searching for your card, clicking Advanced, and checking the Sold listing box.

Looks like one recently sold for $1,875 USD. Not bad.

This particular Chancey was both encased and graded by a company called the PSA, or the Professional Sports Authenticator. The PSA grades the condition of rare trading cards on a quality scale of 1-10, with 10 being known as Gem Mint. Cards graced by Gem Mint status arent just free of manmade scuffs theyre free of the most microscopic factory defect.

Generally speaking, most cards handled by children before retiring into a shoebox will score a PSA of 7 or lower, selling for about 5% to 10% of Gem Mint price.

Unfortunately, the news gets worse any card worth over $500 will likely need PSA grading, and the PSA is currently so overwhelmed that theyve temporarily suspended most services.

Therefore, youre left with three options:

  • Roll the dice on PSAs $300 Super Express service.
  • Wait until they resume basic services.
