How To Play With Buddy Pokemon Go

What Does The Buddy System Do

Pokemon go how to play with your buddy

There is more to it than just having your Pokemon be your partner. One of the benefits you get from having a Buddy is that it may have the chance to find items. It may not happen that often, but it finds items while you are walking with it.

Generate Candy Every KM

The other benefit is that the Buddy generates Pokemon Candies depending on which one you have set. For example, if you have Charmander, Charmeleon, or Charizard set as your Buddy, they will generate 1 Charmander Candy for every 3KM you walked with them. Keep in mind that these Candies are what you used to evolve and strengthen your Pokemon.

You may have noticed that we said they would generate 1 Candy every 3KM, and thats because it is one of the distances given to a Pokemon. The other two are 1KM and 5KM. Different Pokemon have different distance requirements that allow them to generate 1 Candy. You have Pokemon like Caterpie, Pikachu, and others that only need 1KM. While others like Dragonite need 5KM to generate 1 Candy.

Daily Activities And Affection Hearts

Today’s Activities

Engaging in Activities allows a temporary increase of Buddy Pokémon’s mood and rewards Affection Hearts. The Today’s Activities in the Buddy profile screen lists each way to interact with Buddy. Each time trainers engage in a listed activity with their buddy, the hearts will turn from gray to pink, indicating a heart was earned in that category.

Doubled Affection Hearts

When Buddy’s Mood is Excited, the Affection Hearts that could be earned are doubled, except for the Bonus category. Extra earned Affection Hearts remain even if the Buddy is no longer excited.

Daily activities reset at midnight local time.

There are following types of Buddy Activities:

The Uncatchables: Which Pokmon Are Rare Or Impossible To Catch In The Wild In Pokmon Go

Definitions vary. There are some Pokémon that are exclusive to specific regions, like Kangaskhan to Australia. I’m going to discount those immediately since none of them are top-tier Gym defenders or attackers and none have evolutions. So, I’m going to stick with Pokémon that don’t nest and don’t spawn frequently.

A nest is a specific place where a specific Pokémon spawns several times a day for a two-week period before migrating to new, random location. If a Pokémon nests, people will report that nest, and you’ll be able to go to it and catch ’em, earning more Candy than you would walking ’em for the same time.

Without nests or frequent spawns, “the uncatchables” become much better candidates to walk:

  • Grimer – 3 KM
  • Militank – 5 KM
  • Larvitar – 5 KM

There are some Pokémon that don’t spawn in the wild at all, and so can’t be caught. They’re the baby Pokémon, though, and most of their base forms do nest and can be caught in the wild. So, there’s no real advantage to walking them. With one exception:

  • Togepi – 5 KM

Since Togetic doesn’t nest and is an extremely rare spawn.

Note: While Magikarp and Dratini technically don’t “nest”, they can be found at water biomes along rivers, lakes, streams, piers, etc. Think of them as nests that don’t migrate but spawn a variety of water-type Pokémon, sometimes hourly, and Dratini several times a week.

Niantic has made it pretty easy to earn hearts in its new Pokemon Go Buddy Adventure system.

Released last week as part of a new update, your Pokemon Go Buddy can now do a lot more, including following you around the map.

The new system is very much like the one found for Friends in Pokemon Go and it comes with its own set of rewards for those who play the game a lot.

The two main points of the Buddy System that Trainers will be keeping an eye on is accessing new levels to unlock perks and keeping their Buddys mood high.

And the best way to level up your Pokemon Go Buddy level is by earning hearts, which can be achieved by completing daily tasks with your Buddy.

And one of the easiest of them all to perform is also the easiest thing that can be done each day for all Trainers.

Leveling Up Your Buddy

BUDDY UPDATE!

Your friendship with a Buddy Pokémon can level up four times, starting with Good Buddy and ending with Best Buddy. Each friendship level requires collecting a set amount of Affection Hearts, which are earned by interacting with your Buddy and playing the game with that Pokémon assigned as your Buddy.

There are four different Buddy Levels:

Buddy Level
Best Buddy x300

You can earn up to 10 Hearts a day to increase your friendship level. If your Buddys mood is Excited you can earn up to 20 Affection Hearts. You can reach the Best Buddy status in 30 days if you complete your daily tasks every day.

You can collect Affection Hearts by doing the following activities:

After acquiring the first set of 10 hearts, you can unlock the second set by reaching certain thresholds with each Activity category. These thresholds are still being researched, but it seems that theyre 200 snapshots, 20 new places to visit and a combination of other ones.

You can forcibly unlock additional 10 Hearts with use of Poffin without having completed any hearts .

Complete Research Tasks To Gain Bonuses

Field research tasks are essentially a list of quests given to you when you spin a Pokestop, like, Use 5 Berries to help catch Pokemon, or, Catch 10 Pokemon with Weather Boost. Completing them successfully gives you various bonuses including Stardust, items, and encounters with rare Pokemon like Jynx. There are currently three kinds of tasks:

  • Field Research: These are basic goals with a single objective. You get one of these a day and theyre usually something simple like spinning a Pokestop.

  • Special Research: These tasks are more story-based and give you multiple goals that require several steps to complete, like catching and transferring a Pokemon.

  • Research Breakthrough: These tasks are based on collecting stamps and give you rewards like Stardust, items, and rare Pokemon encounters.

  • You can only have up to three tasks at a time, but dont worry, you can trash a task if you think you cant complete it successfully. Clearing a task allows you to pick up a new one.

How Much Candy Do You Get For Walking A Buddy Pokmon

Buddy candy is based on distance. Some Pokémon require you to walk 1 KM, others 3 KM or 5 KM to earn a candy. The distances are roughly but not exactly related to the distance of the Pokémon Eggs they hatch from 2 KM hatches tend to get a candy every 1 KM, 5 KM hatches every 3 KM, and 10 KM hatches every 10 KM, though there are some exceptions.

Heres how walking a Buddy Pokémon compares to other methods for getting Candy in Pokémon Go:

  • 1 Candy per Buddy distance walked.
  • 1 Candy per Pokémon transferred to the Professor.
  • 3 Candies per base-level Pokémon caught in the wild.
  • 6 Candies per base-level Pokémon caught in the wild while using a Pinap Berry.
  • 5 Candies per second-level Pokémon caught in the wild.
  • 10 Candies per second-level Pokémon caught in the wild while using a Pinap Berry.
  • 10 Candies per third-level Pokémon caught in the wild.
  • 20 Candies per third-level Pokémon caught in the wild while using a Pinap Berry.
  • 5 to 15 Candies per 2 KM Egg hatched.
  • 10 to 21 Candies per 5 KM Egg hatched.
  • 16 to 32 Candies per 10 KM Egg hatched.

Again, walking a Buddy Pokémon isnt a fast way to get a lot of Candy but its a consistent way to get a steady stream of Candy.

Okay I Have A Buddy Now What

Go for walks! No, really, now that you have a designated Buddy you should go on strolls. Similar to egg-hatching, you can gain Candy for your buddy the more kilometers you rack up. Interestingly, different Pokemon require you walk different distances. For example, you need to walk 3 kilometers before you get a Candy for Slowpoke. You only get one candy after walking that specific distance, though. You can find out more about your Buddys progress by tapping the Trainer profile icon, then tapping the top of the screen, where your Trainer and Buddy are hanging out. At the top of the screen youll see the total distance traveled. In the middle, youll see your Buddy . At the bottom, theres a gauge that shows how far you still need to walk for a Candy.

Play With Your Buddy As Often As You Can

Its important to interact with your Buddy every day, both to keep their mood up and to quickly climb the ranks to Best Buddy. Activities reset daily, meaning there should always be something new for you to tackle. Plus, you can change your Buddy 20 times a day, and each Buddy has their own unique list of activities. Becoming Best Buddies with your favorite Pokémon isnt easily achieved, but playing with them on a regular basis is a good place to start.

You will then need to select the icon for the character in the lower left-hand corner of your screen next to your Trainer Profile. If you are in AR mode and are having trouble getting the character to appear, turn it off, and your companion will automatically appear on your screen.

How To Make Your Buddy ‘excited’ With Or Without A Poffin In Pokmon Go

How to play with your buddy in Pokemon Go

When in Adventure mode, performing activities with Buddies increases their mood. The highest level mood, ‘excited’ can also give you benefits for a limited time.

When your buddy is ‘excited’ – as indicated by a cheering icon surrounded by Hearts – then you’ll receive the following benefits:

  • Candy distances will be halved
  • Your daily Heart cap increases to 20

Getting a Pokémon excited, then, has its perks. To get it excited, there are two methods:

To make a Pokemon ‘excited’, you can either:

  • Use Poffin – a shop-only item you can purchase from the shop for 100 Coins – which also fills all feeding heart meters for the day
  • Perform enough actions to reach a certain threshold

Though the second one is ‘free’, it’s neither easy or particularly obvious from the outset. You must collect 32 ‘points’ from performing various activities, but you cannot do them at once – each individual activity has a 30 minute cooldown, with the exception of walking.

Here’s how many points you get from each activity :

Some clarifications on the above, thanks to TheTraveller on reddit – you can get multiple Battle points within a half hour if you Battle different ways and Souvenirs, Presents and visiting new Stops have no cooldown, just like walking.

It’s also important to note that, with the introduction of the Season of Celebrations on Tuesday, 1st December, the number of hearts you can earn daily from battling was increased to three.
