You can check your Pokémons mood by bringing up the buddy screen. If theres a happy face with hearts around it, theyve reached the maximum happiness level, which means theyre excited. ExcitedPokémon will get candy twice as fast from walking and will earn double hearts.
Feeding your Pokémon a Poffin, an item that can be bought for 100 coins in the shop, will make them excited for six hours. Players have also been reporting that spinning over 20 new PokéStops will trigger this, but the exact number is unknown. From a resource standpoint, 100 coins is pretty steep for a single Poffin, considering the benefits, so wed suggest saving those coins for other purposes .
What Do The Different Friendship Levels Do
When your buddy reaches specific milestones, theyre able to help you out by bringing you items and even get CP boosts.
- Good Buddy : Walk with you on the map view screen
- Great Buddy : Helps out catching Pokémon and brings you items
- Ultra Buddy : Alerts you of interesting places nearby and brings Souvenirs
- Best Buddy : Gets a special ribbon and gets a CP boost in combat as long as theyre set at your buddy
You can only earn up to 10 hearts per Pokémon a day , so youll have to grind it out for a while to become Best buddies.

To unlock upgrades for your Buddy Pokémon, youll need to complete daily activities you can only complete one activity a day, and each one can get you a heart. But, you can swap your Buddy Pokémon up to 20 times a day. That means you can level up 21 Buddy Pokémon at a time.
The trick to speeding up hearts is finding the easiest ways to earn them. You can very quickly earn 4 Hearts for 21 Pokémon in minutes by completing these activities.
Pokmon Go Buddy Levels And Perks List: How Long It Takes To Reach Good Great Ultra And Best Buddy Level
Once you have played with your Buddy for the first time, it’ll become a Good Buddy. This is the first of four levels you can progress through, each with their range of benefits.

Buddy Levels And Perks
Earning Affection hearts allows Trainer to progress toward improving their Buddy Level. Similarly to Friendship Levels, each Buddy Level unlocks special perks.
Unlike Buddys Mood, Buddy Levels do not decrease over time, much like Friendship Levels.

Adventuring Buddy
Buddy will appear on the Map when it is fed enough and their hunger meter is full. While on the Map, buddy will earn Candy at a reduced walking distance.
Readable Mood
An excited Wailord
Interacting with Buddy improves their Mood. It decreases over time. Swapping buddies reset it back to Normal. Excited is the most positive mood, which doubles the Affection Hearts that could be earned and the candy walking distance is halved when excited.
Once Buddy achieves Good Buddy level, the Mood indicator appears on the Buddy Profile screen. If Buddy is on the map, Trainer can also tap their buddy to see its Mood.

When Buddy Pokémon reaches Great Buddy level it can occasionally bring Trainer a present which are items inside of floral sack.

To open such present, Trainer has to open Buddy profile page and they will see a sack in front of their Buddy. Once they tap on it, the items will be received. These presents can contain items, such as Poké Balls, Potions, Berries, Revives, and stickers from Gifts.

How To Play With Your Buddy In Pokemon Go
It’s not too difficult to play with your buddy Pokemon! All you need to do is tap on their avatar which is right next to your face at the bottom left of the application. This will initially guide you through feeding your buddy and maxing out their food intake. Once you’ve done that, your buddy will now be able to go on an adventure with you. You will see them running around you on the map. Now that you’ve got this done, you can then press on its face again which will open up the buddy menu. You can also access this by tapping on your face and then tapping on your buddy.
Hit the play button and you will be asked to find a flat surface for you buddy to spawn on. Once you’ve done that, you will be able to interact with them! Tap on them to get them to do kind of an attack move, and you can also scratch their head which will make them happy ! Those are pretty much the only things you can do for now, but I’m sure they will add some additional ways to play in the near future.
There’s also a mood level, as you can see by the face in the screenshot above. If your Pokemon reaches the excited mood, your buddy unlocks some additional Perks: distance for you buddy to find Candy is cut in half, number of hearts earned in actions are doubled, and you can earn bonus hearts.

Pokemon Go Buddy Level Rewards
As mentioned before, youll earn extra rewards based on your level of friendship with your Buddy.

How To Select Your Buddy
Playing with your Buddy in Pokémon Go is an easy thing to do. First, youll have to select which Pokémon will be your Buddy. Dont worry about this too much you can change your Buddy up to 20 times each day. If its your first time using the Buddy system, tap on your Trainers picture at the bottom of the screen. Then, navigate to the Buddy menu. Here, the game will walk you through the basics of the Buddy Adventure mechanics.
If youre looking to change your Buddy, its even easier. Simply tap on your Buddys image at the bottom of the screen, then scroll through the menu and press Swap Buddies. Youll be asked to confirm your selection, then your new Buddy will appear on the screen.

How Much Candy Do You Get For Walking A Buddy Pokmon
Buddy candy is based on distance. Some Pokémon require you to walk 1 KM, others 3 KM or 5 KM to earn a candy. The distances are roughly but not exactly related to the distance of the Pokémon Eggs they hatch from 2 KM hatches tend to get a candy every 1 KM, 5 KM hatches every 3 KM, and 10 KM hatches every 10 KM, though there are some exceptions.
Here’s how walking a Buddy Pokémon compares to other methods for getting Candy in Pokémon Go:
- 1 Candy per Buddy distance walked.
- 1 Candy per Pokémon transferred to the Professor.
- 3 Candies per base-level Pokémon caught in the wild.
- 6 Candies per base-level Pokémon caught in the wild while using a Pinap Berry.
- 5 Candies per second-level Pokémon caught in the wild.
- 10 Candies per second-level Pokémon caught in the wild while using a Pinap Berry.
- 10 Candies per third-level Pokémon caught in the wild.
- 20 Candies per third-level Pokémon caught in the wild while using a Pinap Berry.
- 5 to 15 Candies per 2 KM Egg hatched.

Again, walking a Buddy Pokémon isn’t a fast way to get a lot of Candy but it’s a consistent way to get a steady stream of Candy.
Berries Hunger And The Mood Of A Pokemon Buddy
Berries help fill up the hunger meter of a Pokemon in Pokemon Go. Feeding them berries refills their hunger meter, with different berries having different effects. The hunger meter for a Pokemon has six segments, with one segment depleting every 30 minutes.
Buddies can become hungry even if the game isn’t running.

Much like Ash’s Pikachu, who refused to stay in his Poké Ball, your buddy will join you on the map, interact with you, and, once you’ve built up your friendship enough, provide you with bonuses. There’s a lot to this feature and fortunately, we’re here to walk you through it all.

Earning Candy With Your Buddy
Making a Pokemon your buddy means that you earn candy for that particular Pokemon type every time you walk a certain distance. For example, if you were walking with Grotle, you’d be earning Turtwig candy. The rarer a Pokemon is, the longer you need to walk to earn one candy.
- 1 kilometre = 1 candy
- 3 kilometres =1 candy
- 5 kilometres = 1 candy
- 20 kilometres = 1 candy
There are two small exceptions to these rules:
- If the player is level 40 or higher, there’s a chance that their buddy will find a candy XL instead of the regular kind
- Buddy Pokemon can be “excited”and when they are, their usual distance requirement is halved
The first and foremost reason to have a buddy Pokemon is to earn candy! Candy is used to evolve and power up your Pokemon it can be earned in a number of ways, from simply catching Pokemon to trading them with your friends. However, walking with them is a method that you have complete control over!

Wait No Evolved Forms As Buddies Why Not
Because then you can’t use them in Gyms, which is a waste. The candy is the same regardless of whether you’re using a baby, base, or evolved form. So, by making a lower form your candy, you don’t take the higher form out of the game.
In other words, walk Lavitar to get candy to power up Tyranitar. Best of both worlds.

What Is The Pokemon Go Buddy System
First of all, in order to choose a Buddy, simply click on your avatar on the lower left and youll see the Buddy icon. Just click on that and youll be able to choose and change your Buddies anytime.
Basically, the Buddy System allows you to have one of the Pokemon on your roster be like your partner. Feed your Buddy the right amount of Berries and it will start walking with you on the world map. That will run out after time so just feed it Berries again so that it starts running around with you.

Want to check your buddy’s walking stats and then its fighting stats? No problem. To get to the buddy screen quickly, tap on your avatar at the bottom on the map. Then, tap on your buddy when the next screen pops up. This will take you to the buddy screen. Then, tap the gauge below your buddy and you’ll be taken to your buddy’s stat page that includes type, weight, height and fighting abilities.
Daily Activities And Affection Hearts
Today’s Activities
Engaging in Activities allows a temporary increase of Buddy Pokémon’s mood and rewards Affection Hearts. The Today’s Activities in the Buddy profile screen lists each way to interact with Buddy. Each time trainers engage in a listed activity with their buddy, the hearts will turn from gray to pink, indicating a heart was earned in that category.
Doubled Affection Hearts
When Buddy’s Mood is Excited, the Affection Hearts that could be earned are doubled, except for the Bonus category. Extra earned Affection Hearts remain even if the Buddy is no longer excited.
Daily activities reset at midnight local time.

Where Will I Encounter This Task
This task is found in both the Finding Your Voice and Misunderstood Mischief Special Research.
Its the first task of the first step in Finding Your Voice and also the first task of the seventh step in Misunderstood Mischief. Completing these tasks rewards players with 1000 xp and a Furfrou encounter respectively.

Getting your Buddy Pokemon to Excited mood without using a Poffin can be tricky. Luckily, players have solved this mystery through experimentation, and you can reliably get your Buddy excited every day.
The game doesnt provide a lot of visual feedback on your progress, but by repeating the daily activities you will eventually reach Excited mood level.
Heres how to get your Buddy excited:
- You will need 32 Points per day to reach Excited mood for your Buddy
- Each Activity you do has a 30 minute cooldown, except Walk 2 KM per day
