Pokemon Snap Hasn’t Changed In 20 Years That’s A Great Thing

New Pokemon Snap is the long awaited sequel to N64 cult classic and, despite there being 22 years, 7 generations and roughly 750 new Pokemon since the original’s release, the fundamentals of the game haven’t changed much. You’re still inside a capsule vehicle that treks along a fixed path, your and, most importantly, it still rules.

Like many gamers who flocked to buy New Pokemon Snap on Friday, I played the original on the N64. My heart was excited for New Pokemon Snap, but my brain was weary. I had it all wrong. New Pokemon Snap is a reinvigorating vacation for your brain, one that works because it’s so full of heart. Remind you of anything?

Despite being a sequel, New Pokemon Snap reminded me of a completely different game: Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Like Animal Crossing, the appeal of New Pokemon Snap cannot be explained with words alone. Like Animal Crossing, New Pokemon Snap is more satisfying than it should be. Like Animal Crossing, New Pokemon Snap is just nice.

Since its announcement last June, New Pokemon Snap has been subject to consternation among Pokemon fans. In 2021 the Pokemon Snap concept, viable as a full-priced game in 1999, feels like it would be more appropriate as a free-to-play iOS/Android title. How would developers Namco Bandai pad the game out enough to make it feel substantial, without stretching the concept thin?

Later Gen Pokemon And Nostalgia In New Pokemon Snap

IGN‘s guide shows that a variety of Pokemon from later generations will also appear in New Pokemon Snap, all the way up to Generation 8, the Galar Region. So far only three Generation 8 Pokemon have been confirmed, the three starter Pokemon from Pokemon Sword and Shield.

However, the confirmed Pokemon seem to primarily come from the first three generations of the series, emphasizing that New Pokemon Snap seeks to both provide a new experience for younger players and remind older players of their favorite childhood game. Overall, it seems that New Pokemon Snap wants to capitalize on nostalgia.

The original Pokemon Snap had horror undertones that mystified players for years and made a lasting impression, and this new game appears to be taking some interesting risks, as well. Some of the Pokemon in New Pokemon Snap trailers also look larger than usual, perhaps alluding to an in-game phenomenon that alters Pokemon. Fans will have to see for themselves what secrets New Pokemon Snap holds when it arrives on the Nintendo Switch on April 30.

New Pokémon Snap requires players to travel over the Lental region, collecting data on species of Pokémon from all of the 8 current Pokémon regions.

Exploration in the Pokémon series will take a different path for those playing New Pokémon Snap. Instead of raising a party of Pokémon to battle Gyms or knock out rivals, New Pokémon Snap will have players exploring the Lental region with nothing more than a camera. The Lental region is made up of 12 areas, and each boasts Pokémon species belonging to the 8 current generations of the main Pokémon game series. While throwing a Pokéball might not be a possibility in New Pokémon Snap, getting the right snapshot will hopefully be just as satisfying.

Players will trade their Pokédex for a Photodex in the Lental region. Much like the Pokédex however, it will keep track of every Pokémon species a player is able to get a picture of in New Pokémon Snap. These entries will list a Pokémon’s basic data, including height, weight, and type. It will also showcase the photos taken of the species, as well as what area the Pokémon can be found in. This is a great way to keep track of progress while exploring each area in New Pokémon Snap.

It’s a first-person video game developed by Bandai Namco that uses rail shooter mechanics. Players ride along in a vehicle and can take pictures of the creatures they pass.
