Fake Pokemon cards have become increasingly prevalent in recent years as the Pokemon TCG has become more popular. Theyre commonly found on eBay, at flea markets, and in dollar stores.

Fake cards are not worth anything. Theyre illegal for use in tournaments and collectors will not buy them. Therefore, its important to determine that you have genuine Pokemon cards before you try to sell them.

Number : Blastoise 1998 Commissioned Presentation Galaxy Star Hologram

If you havent heard about this one-of-a-kind rarity, be prepared to be blown away.

Before Wizards of the Coast began publishing English Pokémon cards in 1999, they created test prints to determine what the final print of the TCG line would look like. Early Pokémon TCG test prints included examples of Blastoise, Charizard, and Growlithe. Some test prints were printed early enough to be missing the iconic Pokémon backing. Instead, some test prints feature a Magic: The Gathering backing or a blank back. There are currently five Blastoise test prints accounted for, but none of them are rarer or more expensive than this Galaxy Star hologram.

Wizards of the Coast printed test prints for two reasons first, to use as a reference when printing cards or making changes, and second, to send to retailers to give them an idea of what the upcoming Pokémon TCG would look like. In the case of this Blastoise test print, Wizards of the Coast commissioned the print to send directly to retailers for display purposes. Only two of these commissioned presentation cards exist, with only one graded and accounted for. Its rarity is unparalleled, and its value is astronomical as a result.

The only graded copy of the Blastoise 1998 Commissioned Presentation Galaxy Star Hologram sold in a 2021 Heritage Auctions sale for $360,000. If it ever comes back to auction, we know itll be worth a pretty penny then, too.

Pokmon World Championships No 1 Trainer

Could Your Old Pokemon Cards Make You a Millionaire?

Every copy of this rare and valuable promo card is one-of-a-kind

Sold for $31,200 in April 2021

The first of two rare and valuable Pokémon cards called No. 1 Trainer on this list, this particular card was awarded to winners of the regional Battle Road Spring tournaments held in Japan during early 2002.

The regional tournaments were held as qualifiers for the Pokémon World Championships, with the small number of No. 1 Trainer cards produced for the few winners making them some of the rarest Pokémon cards in existence.

Adding to the card’s rarity is the fact that each No. 1 Trainer card was customised with the name of the tournament winner printed onto the card, making each card one-of-a-kind. According to auction house Heritage Auctions, the personalised aspect of the cards also mean that they rarely appear at auction, making them an even rarer sight in the world of Pokémon cards.

The 2002 No. 1 Trainer card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, best known as being one of the original artists and designers for Pokémon’s first generation of 151 Pokémon. The text on it reads: “The Pokémon Card Game Official Tournament Battle Road Spring 2002 champion is recognised here, and his honour is praised.” Sugimori’s No. 1 Trainer artwork – featuring fan-favourite Pokémon such as Pikachu, Chansey and Marrill – is exclusive to the card, making it especially unique.

The Rarity Of The Pokemon Card

Pokemon cards come in a number of different rarities. Different Pokemon card rarities can be seen from the rarity symbol, which is normally displayed in the bottom left or bottom right corner of the card.

Common: the card has a circle symbol.

Uncommon: the card has a diamond symbol.

Rare: the card has a star symbol.

Ultra rare: the card has a holographic star symbol, possibly gold or silver in colour.

There are many different types of ultra rare Pokemon cards, including EX, GX, Prime, Level X, and V cards. Normally these types of Pokemon cards will have this distinction next to their name.

As a general rule, most common/uncommon Pokemon cards arent worth much typically less than $0.10 each. As a result, theyre normally sold in bulk. There are exceptions to this rule though, especially with very old first gen Pokemon cards.

Rare and ultra rare Pokemon cards can vary in what theyre worth quite dramatically. For example, a typical non-holo rare from the latest set will normally be worth $0.50 $1.00 or so. But a holographic Base Set Charizard could be worth $500 or more.

How To Research Pokmon Card Prices

If youre looking to maximize your return on selling your Pokémon cards, you will need to do your research. Blindly selling individual cards without doing the legwork on Pokémon card value could end up selling yourself short and giving a collector a great deal.

The best way to research Pokémon card prices is to look at real life selling history. After all, Pokémon cards are only worth what someone is willing to pay. Check out these three resources to see what your Pokémon cards are worth:

  • eBay has the largest collection of Pokémon cards for sale online
  • Pokemonprices.com is regularly updated with eBay and Amazon card selling data to reflect the average price of specific cards
  • TCGPlayer is an online store for buying and selling trading cards, with card prices that reflect the average sale price of said cards within the TCGPlayer store

How To Check The Rarity Of Your Pokemon Cards

There are thousands of cards to collect, and they have not all been printed in equal amounts. Different cards have different pull rates and these determine their rarity. All cards feature one of four black symbols that reveal how rare it is. A circle means the card is Common and probably wont sell for more than a few cents online. Cards with a diamond are Uncommon, and Pokemon cards with a star are Rare. Some cards will have a star and the word PROMO to alert collectors that they are holding a Promo card. These are cards that are distributed during special events or with special sets. These symbols give a rough idea of a card’s value, though this is just the tip of the iceberg. For instance, there are various types of Rare cards, including Holo Rares, Ultra Rares, Secret Rares, Gold and Black Rares, Amazing Rares, and gorgeous Rainbow Rares. These various Rares have different values on the market depending on which Pokemon, Item or Trainer they depict.

Selling Your Pokmon Cards

Now for the fun part: selling the cards and making money. Many of the strategies for selling Pokémon cards parallel the tricks for buying.

Search Engine Optimization

Suppose you learn the basics of each online marketplaces SEO guidelines. Use the right keywords, post a great thumbnail, and promote your listings in other ways. This way, your cards will get in front of more potential buyers.

High-Quality Photos

As we already noted, high-quality photos encourage people to purchase a particular card. So its a no-brainer that youd take a wide variety of great images of each card.

Posting high-quality photos on your listing can increase the cards value because it ensures that your buyers trust you.

Sell Cards on Multiple Platforms

To sell more cards in a shorter period, it helps if you at least try posting your listings on a few different platforms. Find the right balance for you adding too many can be overwhelming.

You can even cross-post the same card on multiple sites and keep track of which help you bring in the highest profit.

Be Wary of Buyer Scams

Buyers scam sellers just as much as sellers can scam buyers. On top of that, platforms like Mercari take the buyers side in a dispute more often than not.

Look At The Condition Of The Pokemon Card

Using the Pokemon card grading definitions we discussed above, try to gauge the condition of your card.

As long as the card has nothing more than some minor whiting around the edges in small areas when viewed from the back, then you should be safe to assume that the card is near mint or better.

This Shaymin card is in near mint condition, so we dont have to worry about the condition too much. Well discuss what to do if your card is damaged in step 5.

How To Identify The Rarest Pokmon Cards

The first step to determining if you have a Pokémon card that may be worth serious money is to look at the symbol in the bottom right corner. A circle indicates that the card is common. A diamond tells you that a card is uncommon. Finally, a star or letter “R” means the card is rare and has the most potential to have significant value. Some of the rarest Pokémon cards have limited print runs or special variations in their design. Pokémon cards worth investigating can have a holographic finish while reverse holo cards are holographic except for the character picture toward the top. Ultra-rare cards are the hardest to come across, and will often have “ex” or “Prime” included in the name of the card.

Take Very Good Pictures Of Your Cards

When you are ready to sell, you should know that the presentation of your listing is extremely important. Buyers will want to trust you and verify that your cards are the real deal.

Make sure your photo doesnt have any distracting objects other than the card itself. You should be sure the image is clear and close enough to the card so the buyer can view its appearance. Make sure to use a black or white background and take the photo in good lighting.

Is Your Pokmon Card A Misprint

It may sound counterintuitive that an error would make something more valuable, but then, it also makes something more unique and therefore rarer.

Keep in mind mention that a misprinting of a card, doesnt automatically make your card worth more money. As mentioned before, a misprint of a card will generally result in a lower score from a professional card grading service.

However, there is a market for misprints, and certain well-known misprints, in particular, can drive up the price of a Pokémon card and sell for a decent amount of money.

One such printing error is the much desired first edition base set Red-cheeked Pikachu, which is currently worth more than $10,000 USD provided that it is in Gem Mint condition.

Even lower graded version of this card can be seen to be sold for several hundreds of dollars.

Tournament And Promo Cards

Not all Pokemon cards come from booster packs. Some of the rarest Pokemon cards were only given out as tournament prizes or promotional giveaways. These cards usually bear a stamp on the art to identify where they came from or have a special promo star in the bottom corner, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled for these sorts of markings on your cards.

Some of these special cards were quite commonplace back in the day–such as the promotional Mew card given out in 1999 to those who bought tickets for Pokemon: The First Movie– so theyre not worth more than a few dollars now.

But some, like the 2011 and 2012 Tropical Beach card from the Pokemon World Championships, can easily fetch hundreds of dollars.
